Hi all. My daughter had recently really taken to the sport (she is 10) I used to climb before I had kids - that was 11 years ago and I am now out of the loop when it comes to updated gear.
The question - I have a 1o year old Blue Water rope - 11 mm - Do climbers nowadays use 10 mm or thinner for lead and top roping or are they still using 11 mm?
The new rope would be for my 55# daughter.

whatever works
a ~9.8-10.3mm is a fairly standard do all rope these days
if your much lighter daughter is leading and you are the one belaying ... consider a rope with a bit of a "softer" catch so she feels less impact ... also make sure you know when and how to give a dynamic belay ...

10 years is getting pretty old for a rope. A light girl TRing on a fat rope is probably not a big deal, but I'd be considering getting a new rope if it was me.

It's a good point - the rope has been used - but I figured to TRing it would be fine. But with the new ropes I've looked at buying a thinner new rope is where it's at. Thanks for the reply!

Unless the rope has been mistreated in some way (acid exposure being the big one), a 10-year old 11mm rope will not break in a top-rope application. It will be quite safe. It will, of course, be heavier to carry and stiffer to handle than a newer, thinner rope.
If your daughter (or you) is lead climbing, though (or when/if she/you starts), you should at that time consider a newer, thinner rope -- because it will be springier and give softer falls on lead.
