How do I start snow climbing?

I've had enough of computer games (League of Legends) and I want to change myself for the better. The Eiger looks really fun to climb. How should I get started, especially for someone with no climbing experience?

Don't just jump into snow/ice climbing. Work your way up, starting off in a gym, going to some outdoor crags. Once you are experienced in those things you can give it a try confidently judging by your experience on knowing how ropes work, how to belay, techniques etc.

It also generally depends on where you live.

That's not the right beta at all.

Its:

Up-Up-Down-Down-Left-Right-Left-Right, B, A, SELECT, Start.

What games are you playing Smile

Left, Right, Left Right, A, B, A, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up

Konami code
up up down down left right left right B A start.

From there find someone with the proper gear that you can either rest or borrow and see if mountaineering is for you. Start off in the gym than move on to sport to trad to ice climbing ect. Its expensive and you need to take you time discovering the proper skills.

So admittedly, this is rockclimbing.com, so a lot of people are going to go with this advice, but having just moved to the Pacific Northwest, where a lot of people climb volcanoes, its actually kind of a lousy way to go. I'd say, if you're in the right geographic region, sign up for a guided trip up one of the Cascade volcanoes. They can teach you all you need for simple snow movement, and if you feel like its still something you want to do, then you can consider hitting the climbing gym, learning to place gear, etc. There's absolutely no sense in learning these techniques strictly in series, especially given that I know and climb with several people who got into rock climbing after doing routes that required crampon and ice axe work.

How exactly does going to the climbing gym or cragging prepare one for snow climbing? They bear absolutely no resemblance. I guess you might learn some basic rope skills, but 90% of snowclimbing (at least in my experience) is done unroped.

My advice: buy yourself some crampons and an ice axe, and go read the snow climbing section of "Freedom of the Hills". Then find a nice low-medium angle snow slope with a good runout and practice everything you just read. Multiple times.

Particularly make sure you practice the self-arrrest part. Although I would put way more emphasis on not falling in the first place.

It's one of those things best learned by practice.

I don't know about the alpine club in the US but the alpine club of Canada does a lot of FREE classes on snow/ice/glacier travel and they have FREE ice climbing trips. All you need is a harness and you can rent the rest from MEC.

First, learn how to walk up hills without any snow.

Next, learn how to walk on flat ground with snow.

Finally, try walking up a hill with snow.
