Stealing from MP, but it's worthy.

DPM Article / video of what appears to be someone chipping routes in the 'Gunks.

I remember this coming up last year, and now there's a video of it. Several people have possibly identified the person as fairly well-known boulderer from the area (I'll leave names aside because I don't know enough to say for certain).

My thoughts:

1) we don't know what's really going on in the video. Yes, I think it looks like chipping, but there is a lack of perspective that keeps it from being certain.

2) the video says this takes place on public land (i.e. - not Mohonk Preserve). I don't recognize it. Not sure if this represents an access issue, but it might depending on where it is.

3) I think it's lame the videographers remain anonymous. Seriously, if you're going to tar and feather someone, put your name on it. This is especially true when you're trying to raise awareness about preventing the sort of action they seem to have caught. Without their names, this video could simply be well-edited, framed, and a bunch of bullshit. At least here, the accused should have an opportunity to face his accusers.

4) chipping is fucking lame. that's not a 100% statement, as circumstances dictate what is allowable and where, but in general, it's lame.

Well, regardless of his intent, his actions set a bad example and are clearly dangerous. Sooner or later he's going to end up with an eye injury doing that.

I just opened a new route in Sedona. We added some bolts, pulled off some flakes and loose rock. It will probably clean up after a few more people climb it.

We may have done more damage than he did (Ivan Greene is the person in the video) but I would not condone the manner in which he cleaned his project. Especially convincing are the tools of his trade.

I hope he rethinks his mission in life.

The manufacturing of holds is fucking lame. Yeah you might be "creating a route" but your ruining NATURAL rock formations, that more than likely, have a fucking way to get up them. Go fucking climb indoors.

Its funny how after people rip into him at the bottom of the video and all "Ivan Green" does is flexes his fingers and doesn't clear up shit.

I think there's a big difference between cleaning dangerous rock vs. shaping / molding a route. I know it happens in a lot of areas, and that a lot of people condone it, but yeah, there are better ways to go about contributing to the climbing world.

I think what the video showed was super lame.

Elderid has apparently dropped all reference of Ivan Greene from their website.

Well, there we go.

Any idea who else sponsors him? Especially harmful is that people asked him to stop or modify his methods and he seems to have ignored public opinion. Darn loner.

I'll be honest, he's in a climbing vid I own and I remember thinking this guy is a total tool when I watched that segment. Since then, I've stopped paying attention to him. I just don't find him interesting or inspiring at all. I have no idea who else sponsors him.

Whoa, the guy chipping is Ivan Greene? I saw him present his movie of his trip to BVI, he just surrounded himself with hot blondes to make the movie interesting.

Whoa, the guy chipping is Ivan Greene?

Apparently. There are folks who are saying this with certainty.

I don't think that would surprised anyone at all.
