Hey there, I'm hoping someone more experienced will be able to weigh in here. I just began climbing at the beginning of Jan 2013. So far I've only climbed in the gym, and have just breached the 5.11s in the past month. In just the past week or so, I've begun experiencing what to my mind is a very odd sensation, which is that I have twice so far knocked the wind out of myself somehow while on routes. Each time, I've been on a route that has a section that requires a large, dynamic move to make it to the next handhold. The move each time has involved a bit of a lunging reach that somewhat twists the abdomen while pushing with the leg. On both occasions, the result has been a short period of time in which I feel as though I've been punched in the stomach, accompanied by a shooting pain that travels from the obliques on the side of the reach up into the pecs on the same side. These sensations have subsided after about a minute or so. I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced or heard of this before? If so, any idea as to how/why this occurs? Any idea how to prevent it? Thank you!

Yeah, that happened to a girlfriend of mine (who was tall and slim). Better get checked out. Also, by the way, if you're pulling down on 11's after just a month of climbing you're setting yourself up for some serious tendonitis. Take it easy and build a good base.
