New climber - gear advice?

Hi all,

I realize this post may be better off in the "Gearheads" area...but I am a beginner....

Anyways, first time poster. Glad I found this place. I've been poking around - seems like a great community!

To business - my girlfriend bought me a month membership to a local rock gym and we went together for the first time last night - loved it! (Well, I knew I would. Ha. I used to climb sporadically though high school and college but then stopped. Haven't done it in close to 5 years. Even then, I was using hand-me down equipment and/or renting).

I was hoping some of you could recommend some good all-around harness and shoes. For now I'd like to get back in the swing of things and practice at the gym and jump into the outdoor scene eventually. I'm in the northeast, if that means anything. Again, mostly climbing/bouldering in the gym for now and hopefully getting outside into sport climbing.

Or, better yet - if anyone has recommendations for a good shop or two in the great Boston area that would help too.

Don't need anything too expensive.

Thanks for your help!

Try visiting your local gear shop and see if they'll put together a "beginner's" gear package for you. A lot of shops and companies do this which should make it a bit cheaper than buying everything individually (usually ~10% off).

I'm still a noob, but from what I've read (& experienced) beginner's have terrible footwork. I'm holding off on buying shoes for sometime and renting instead. And I'll buy some cheap shoes in time. For a harness, you don't need something that's $100's of dollars. Find a store near you, (Eastern Mountain Sports or REI, probably) that sells them. I have a Black Diamond Momentum AL and I love it. The Momentum SA is nice, too. And a bit more pricey, but the CAMP Quartz CR3 is something people swear by. It's personally up to what you think is style-ish and what fits.
