Can I use an 8mm personal escape rope (often used by firemen as one time emergency rappel/escape rope) to build top rope anchors? Item in question: http://www.sterlingrope.com/product/456557/PER080/_/8mm_PER

Sounds fine but any static line will do the same. I use whatever rope I can get to make an anchor. If you have an old dynamic rope use it as an anchor if it is serviceable. A good practice, regardless of rope type, is to protect and pad the rope over sharp edges. I am a fireman and have never even thought about using an 8mm for any work purpose. I use a smaller nylon line to tie off the bail on the nozzle if I have to search beyond the length of the hose line. I have also used it to lower and raise tools.

I did have a redundant anchor of course.
