Has anyone experienced a quick release waist adjust buckle on a harness catch on something and do a quick release while climbing ?

No, but then I purposefully select harnesses with the standard buckles so it's not even a possibility for me.

you see them on industrial rigging harnesses like MSA or Miller but not common in climbing since there is a chance that buckles may open up during fall

I've never owned a harness without quick-adjust buckles in my 10 years of climbing. Never a problem.

I should have mentioned that mine slipped yesterday on a climb ... scary. It could be partly due to the harness being quite old and the webbing being worn. I'm now shopping for a replacement with old style buckles. There doesn't seem to be many around, apart from the Metolius Safe Tech range and there's a heavy BD one.

I had to buy a harness with a quick release buckle... I was so upset that the old kind are no longer sold in my area.

I am always seeing people retightening the quick release buckels at the gym. Something that is suppose to keep you safe should not come loose.

Misty Mountain has several styles that come with the standard buckles (Cadillac, Cirque, Titan).

Also, since they're a small company you can call them and I'm sure they'll put standard buckles on any of their other harnesses for you with little to no charge.

it refers to quick release or disconnect like seat belt release and I only seen them on industrial application so if yours does not disconnect like seat belt release then we are talking about two different terms

Bingo.

We're confusing "quick release" with "quick adjust", but then again this is a rock climbing forum and not an industrial rope-access forum.

Syd would be better off asking this on a rope-access forum rather than here.

You´re right, I pondered over this while welding today (as it is unutterably boring). There is a difference between quick-release like on a paratroopers harness and speed buckles on a climbers, since I´ve never seen a quick-release one on a climbing harness I assumed the OP was confusing the terminology.
Though from my racing car days the quick-release part is termed "latch" and the adjusting "buckles" are a different item so perhaps my confusion is obvious :-)

you need to use the proper term and stop confusing people. quick release means you press and things comes apart and I own several industrial harnesses and almost 10 different type of climbing and no climbing harness to my knowledge comes with quick release unless it has an industrial application. Again quick adjust and quick release are two different things.

Tie an overhand if you're worried about slippage.

You fatties need to lose some lbs.

I've been climbing with a 'quick adjust' buckle for years and never had to tighten it during a day of climbing hangdogging.

I once saw a guy unknowingly brush his harness up against a sharp(ish) edge. The edge caught the buckle end and when he moved, even if ever so slightly, it loosened the harness just enough for him to notice.

But yeah, I do actually need to lose weight. That's for real.

Yes, there is such a things as "quick release" buckles in climbing harnesses.

I know it's hard to remember that words mean things, so this is a friendly reminder.

The harness you linked is not quick release. You still have to loosen the webbing in the speed style buckle enough to be able to pull the gray locking tab out far enough to rotate it and slot it back through the opening in the blue plate.

They are also designed for alpine use and would probably be uncomfortable for more than single pitch.

Well, you're wrong on all counts.

I've used an older version of this buckle (briefly). Not that complicated. You can very easily open it without loosening the buckle just by pulling the harness up and sucking in your gut. Put it on the same way. People are squishy.

As for the "alpine" thing, this is Mammut's all-arounder harness, just with the quick buckles. It's exactly identical in every way to their standard high end harness, which is intended for all pursuits, except for the buckles. They also make a different, truly alpine-specific harness.

Edit: I don't english good.

Your forceful reply is rather unwarranted in light of what I wrote.

The buckles are not quick release. They are by design and intent a multi stage release in which you must first release the tension on the webbing (even counting on "squishiness"). That this can be done relatively quickly and easily, does not mean they fit the description of quick release as per up thread indicating a single action release.

As for the other point, I expressed an opinion (qualified by "probably"). I have used the harness and would be fine with it for cragging or alpine as it is light and easily removed. I would not like to use it on multi-pitch and have never used it for such based on the fact that it was uncomfortable to hang in on single pitch.

edit for spelling and clarity.

I have a Petzl Calidris. The buckles on the leg loops have always slipped and recently I had an incident where the waist buckle slipped on a climb. My wife also has a Petzl harness and her leg buckles always slip.

I've just order a Metolius Safe Tech with "old style" buckles to replace my Petzl. If it works well, I'll buy one for my wife too.

My new Metolius harness arrived this morning. Testing from a tree in my backyard shows it is easily my most comfortable harness ever. The key is not the padding, but the adjustable leg loop height. Getting it at the correct height, stops the waist band rising up and pressing on my ribs and diaphragm. All buckles are bomber.

I have to say that this kind of surprises me. I have been using my first harness with the newer style buckles (arcteryx: about 50 days climbing now) with no slipping (or at least no more than the small amount I had with my Misty Mountain Cadillac). My wife used a Petzl Corax with no issues for about 4 years.

I wonder if there are some other factors involved, fit, climbing type, etc... I notice a little slipping in the legs loops when I am walking a lot in my harness (moving from crag to crag or long climbs with some 3rd class pitches)

I really like the Misty Mountain harnesses, but I didn't want to wait for my next trip to NC.
