Try the NuvaRing. After your initial three months getting used to it (three weeks on, one week off), your doctor should be able to give you clearance to use it continuously (four weeks on, change and replace immediately) and you can pretty much only have four periods a year. To answer the OP, yeah, it affects my climbing. I have little to no interest in hitting anything to do with climbing during that time frame. :/

RABclimbon wrote: Does anyone purposely take birth control so they can surpress their periods and thereby climb more? I am considering taking hormonal birth control so I can spend a few weekends on climbing trips that would otherwise be very badly timed to coinside with my period. Peeing behind rocks and changing tampons is not on my list of fav activities but I love weekend climbing/camping trips. Talk to your doctor, obviously. I've done this a few times due to travel. Two months in a row seems fine, but when I've gone more than 2 months straight I start to have problems.

Yaz causes very very light periods and for me, I didn't gain weight or get the painfully heavy boobs. However, my climbing went to crap - tired and had lost the zeal and the ability to climb with aplomb (suppressed testosterone I suppose). I quit and it all came back.

1. yes, i frequently alter my pill sched to not have my period on weekends where i'm climbing. even if its just by a couple pills of the new pack to delay it. 2. nuvaring makes me fucking psycho, and i quit after 6 months. i take, i think, yasmin, and my doctor told me its ok to do the same 4 period a year thing with that. i THINK any monophasic pill (same hormone dose in all "active" pills) can do that, but i'm not sure. 3. as very much demonstrated today- my period affects my climbing. god damn not sending anythin today.

Clausti - I was told the opposite for Yasmin. I reported to my doc that I skipped my period and she told me not to do it again because it's a strong pill. I wonder if it is OK with Yaz (but they only lowered the progesterone part).

I feel your pain about not sending. Because I don't have time to climb outside at all, not only am I getting worse (forget a plateau-I'm on a major down hill), I got my period and was sucking at the gym. Nothing more depressing than flailing on plastic. No, can't think of anything worse.... Ane then, when I finally do go outside, my new partners will think I totally suck hard. Must not get bitter.....must not get bitter.....must not get bitter......

I haven't climbed anything decent in 8 months thanks to injuries. Still it can be frustrating whatever boat you are in.

I had to give up bouldering (which keeps me in a pretty good shape even in a gym) due to a shoulder injury. So, I also have the injury thing on top of everything else. After 3 months, it still hurts. You are totally right, though. I can still climb and no serious injuries. Really, I am a really nice and positive person, but I think all this studying is depressing me....

I agree that the nuvaring can be brutal for some women. I hate to use the 'labia excuse' (as my guy friends call it) but seriously, they don't have any idea what it's like, and seeing that other women go through similar situations makes me feel a LOT better about realizing where I'm at in my cycle and making that connection.

It affects my climbing - but only because I have a very bad memory and I forget to take "provisions" with me. So we get out and then I remember "Uh oh, I forgot my tampax". So then we are heading back to the nearest town pretty quick! Once we had finished a day at Red Rocks and I was in the first pull-out parking lot and a woman came upto me and asked if I had any "provisions". We were en-rotue to the airport so I did have my bags and was able to help her out. I hope this will be good karma for me next time I am in the wilderness and get caught out and a friendly woman will have some spares on her.
