I know that Ed does a lot for the climbing community in Potrero, and he has friends who are mods here, but as far as I know he doesn't pay the site for his constant advertising through blog links and front page photos. It seems like 75% of the pics on the front page are his, and most are crap. He is working the system, as seen in this reply I got from him In reply to: Don't be jealous, Tony. Next time you post a photo (I've seen some of your's and they're pretty good) just vote for it yourself then have your wife and a friend vote and, bam, you're on the front page. I haven't posted any pics, but as soon as Ed does the same three users vote it an instant 5 stars and block out other more worthwhile and varied pics. The blog links add no content to the site, and are just meant to get free advertising. The dude is working the system.

Tony, you're wrong. My blog postings are entirely rock climbing related. I also wish more people would vote on the photos but it seems that most just don't bother.

In reply to: Next time you post a photo [...] just vote for it yourself I'm surprised the site allows you to vote on your own photos when it prevents rating your own posts. Voting your own photos 5 stars is lame. Sadder though is that it is so easy to game. I used the link to sort all photos from the last month by number of votes. The "winner" has a whopping 5 votes (one of Ed's, so it includes the automatic 5 star votes from himself, potreroqueen (his wife, I guess?), and ccspikes). This site has apparently died and nobody even bothers to look at the photos or vote any more. If there was any traffic voting other photos up or down it would drown out the 3 biased votes. Sadly the site management has disappeared and it seems this place is on cruise control to irrelevance.

Yes, Ed has interest in as many people as possible going to Potrero, but there is nothing wrong with what he is doing here. It is not spam, it's great content, and it certainly gets people psyched on going to Mexico. Furthermore, if this entire site were not such a neglected shithole, Ed's posts would seem less "spammy," because they would be balanced out by a lot of other diverse, user-generated content. But as it stands, Ed's posts are just kind of a voice crying in the wilderness, since this site has so little community engagement.

The photos and blog links are climbing relevant and completely appropriate for the site. They add far more value than your complaints about his posts.

It's inevitable: the cool kids were tough on the new kids, and now that the cool kids have left or post infrequently, all that's left is tumbleweed. There are enough posts that folks like me still come to read the site, so I expect there's marginal impact on advertising revenue so far and no reason for site management to get involved; once advertising revenue declines it may be too late for site management actions to have any effect. And that's ok: I wouldn't be all busted up to find that rudeness doesn't pay in the long run.

I, for one, don't read blog posts ever. I also have no interest in climbing in Potrero, but if the blog write-up was copy and pasted here I would probably give it a quick read. I can't help but think that if Ed wanted to do a public service, he would reach more people by doing that here (and on MP and the Taco where it was also linked) but that would limit whatever traffic he is trying to direct to his own blog site. As for the pics, good ones come and go because no one wants to take the time to vote. I recently had two pics in heavy rotation on the FP, and asked a photo editor to change the settings to keep them off. I was embarrassed to see them as often as was happening. Non-scientific experiments have shown that once a pic gets three five star votes, even a single star rating doesn't effect it showing in the FP. As for the site, it's going through yet another ownership and/or management change. It's like a game of "hot potato" where no one wants to be holding it anymore. There is no clear vision, no direction, no wind to fill the sails. The all-to-brief period when j_ung was running the site was promising and full of potential. Since then the trolls and loud mouths have taken over the forums, and as a result I asked to step down as a mod after some 8 years. I don't see any hope for a turnaround.

And so, loathe as he may be to admit it, his business model is a parasite contributing to the host's demise: ensuring that his own poor pictures make the front page is good for him but poor for rc.com readership. Unfortunately that's compatible with the parasitic business model in the long term as well as the short term: he'll just follow the readers wherever they go after rc.com is dead.

Either will do.
