I'm going to be in the area soon, and want to get in some bouldering. What's the deal with the park regulations? Do you need to call ahead, check in, and/or get a permit to boulder or is that just for roped climbing?

i don't know the rules and regs, but he careful not to wonder onto federal property. someone very very very very important takes his rest days there. there's comandos in gillie suits with machine guns in the woods who do not hesitate to sneak up on your ass and introduce themselves. i know. i've been escorted to my car by two of them, and subsequently escorted back into PA by two different men in a Chevy sedan with Hawaii plates.

Cunningham Falls Park is NOT okay to boulder in at the moment, we are working on access and it should be secured shortly. In the meantime avoid climbing within Cunningham falls park boundaries (this unfortunately includes the Jonah boulder).

However, you are allowed to boulder within the national park, Catoctin Mountain Park. If a ranger harasses you, just explain you are bouldering NOT climbing, to climb on a rope you do need a permit-most rangers aren't sure of the difference and if you politely explain this to them they will leave you alone. If you want a local guide just PM me.

if you breath O2, you are not following fed regulations and must receive a citation CFR121.A

Thanks for the update. I was down in the area this past weekend and decided to check out Harper's Ferry so as not to violate a regulation and create access issues (since I didn't see the post until today). That is a very beautiful area with some quality rock, so best of luck with securing more access, and hopefully I'll be down there again soon to find more awesome climbs.

Hey, just wondering if access has changed at all in the last month and a half. My brother just moved to the area and I was thinking of checking out the bouldering in the upcoming months. Also, if any local wanted to get out for a sesh and show me around sometime, I certainly wouldn't mind.

Not sure what the "Official" current access situation is for Cunningham falls, but the best bouldering within park boundries isn't near any major trails anyway.

The quantity and quality of bouldering around the Manor Park Campground and Thurmont Watershed is much better than the Falls Trail/Jonah boulder area. It's also much more discrete! Furthermore, the Thurmont watershed area isn't even owned by the park any longer and is maintained by the town of Thurmont. There's hella good bouldering there..DO NOT TRESPASS ON THE THURMONT POLICE DEPARTMENT SHOOTING RANGE...It is clearly marked.
