Making my first trip up to the north shore to do some climbing at Palisade Head and Shovel Point! Looks to be a great spot!

Wondering if anyone could offer up some advice on camping spots? I did manage to get a spot for one night in the Tettegouche cart in area, but the weekend is booked solid... Are there open areas to camp anywhere in the vicinity? Just looking for a quiet spot away from the crowds.

Many thanks in advance!

Cheers

Hey,

I'd recommend on of Finland State Forest campgrounds such as Ecbeck. Normally they aren't full and very quite.

What weekend where you thinking of coming up to the North Shore?

That looks like it will work nicely. Thanks! I'm going to be there June 13-16th. Any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated as we are total newbies to the area. My experience is mostly devils lake, rrg and a couple other areas in the midwest. Thinking we are mostly going to TR since we are new to the area. Also never climbed on this type of stone. I hear it is somewhat sharp and brittle?

Well the rock up here isn't very sharp and it's not that brittle. It's primarily granite / basalt so rather solid. You will run into some loose stuff on a few lower grade climbs but nothing to worry about.

If you're going to be top roping (or leading) at Palisade or Shovel you need a solid understanding how to rig a top rope top belay and / or set up a rescue pulley to haul someone up who can't finish a route.

To set anchors at Shovel their are HUGE custom made bolts so all you'll need is a couple lengths of cord or webbing 30' long.

For Palisade it's all trad anchors combined with a few 30' lengths cord or webbing.

In both cases I recoment using an auto blocking belay device (gri gri, cintch) for you top rope, top belay so that your belayer isn't too tired to climb.

Cool. Good to hear! I am really looking forward to this trip. My fingers are crossed for decent weather. Have you checked out the Wolf Ridge area? Would it be a good alternative if the weather is rough on Superior?

Thanks for the tips on set up. We have plenty of gear and I will be sure to pack some extra webbing and cord. Could you elaborate on the pulley system? I was thinking sending the climber down with a pair of ascenders just in case the climbing is too hard.

Wolf Ridge can be very nice but it doesn't get a lot of sun so if it's been rainy then things could be wet.

As for the pulley system this is something that I don't want to explain over e-mail. Let me do a bit of work and I'll post up a drawing or two from a couple books I have.

Having the climbers use ascenders can be just fine as long as they know how to use them.

Can't help you with camping info 'cuz it's been a long time since I've been there, but have fun, the North Shore is awesome. At some point you'll want to check out some of the hidden crags.

There are no 'hidden' crags.
