Have been climbing at Crowders Mtn for about a year now and am looking to make a trip to get my hands on some good rock. I have family in KY very close to the RRG but have heard its mainly a sport climbers paradise. Anyone have any personal preferences as to why they would choose KY vs NC(linville/lookinglass/stone) for a weekend climbing trip? I am interested in Top Roping(yes I am noobish) with the option of some easy grade multi pitch routes. Any ideas? Will have a party of 3 maybe 4. Thanks!

Is there anyone in your group of 3 or 4 who is a proficient leader? If not, I think you are better off waiting and going on such a trip later, once you can lead, or going with someone who can lead.

I can't speak for Linville Gorge or Stone Mountain, but neither RRG nor Looking Glass will have much in terms of toproping, unless someone leads the pitch first for you, to set up toprope.

And yes, RRG is a sport climber paradise, but there are plenty of gear routes there, too, and there are entire crags that are predominantly trad areas, with nothing (or hardly anything) bolted. You will not find a lot of multi-pitch routes at the Red it is overwhelmingly single pitch.

There are some nice walls in linville that are good in the summer

but stone is horrible for the summer.

looking glass is good in some spots in the summer.

I sent you a PM.
