So I'm thinking of building an outdoor campus board on the back of my garage. My question to everyone here is would putting a wood perservative on the actual campus rungs ruin how they work? I've been reading up on building a campus board but it assumes an indoor application. The guide mentions not putting texture paint etc on the rungs but I'm not sure about a water repellant. Anyone have any experiece with it?

Typical water repellents soak into bare wood, so I don't think the contact/friction properties of the wood would be adversely affected.

how much are the rungs you're looking at? You could just replace them in 2-3 years if they age that much.
