On Sunday, June 29th, we set out to climb one of the easier routes on Colorados first Flatiron. Halfway up the second pitch, a thunderstorm rolled in. With Lightning striking the cliff within twenty meters on all sides of us, we took shelter under a huge flake to the right of the route. Shortly after the storm passed, Rocky Mountain Rescue arrived to set up a fixed line, allowing us to rappel to safety.

EPIC ... thats all ill say for now Wink

Private video, you can't see it unless the owner of the vid grants you access.

Majid try reading a bit more closely - bear-poker isn't the creator or owner of the video. He's just trying to provide a link to it. And that site where it's mirrored doesn't have any virus on it.

Wowzer!!!

Most of us at one time or another have screwed up and got lucky and made it through. Don't know that I've ever seen so many screw ups compounded on top of each other before they even left the ground.

Could of ended worse though. Dumb luck it didn't.

Quote from the top of the first pitch, when retreat looked feasible: "Um, the sun is setting right now, some dark clouds are rolling in, so we're thinking this is an adventure."

Yes, an adventure they were in no way prepared for, and one that they laughingly entered into when all evidence suggested it was a horrible idea. Then they call in a rescue and put more people at risk. I'm glad they made it out with only their egos bruised. Let's hope this tempers their bravado and that they learned something.

Re: Rescue of Stranded Climbers

Case Number: 13-3430
29 June 2013

On Friday, 28 June 2013 at 9:45pm, the Boulder County Communications Center received a call from three climbers stuck on the 1st pitch of the “Fandango” route on the 1st Flatiron. They are experienced climbers and had been climbing the route when their rope got stuck in a crack. Shortly thereafter, an intense storm cell moved over the area, bringing hail, heavy rain, and extensive lightning activity.

Rescue personnel from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Mountain Parks, American Medical Response, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist. Rescuers reached the climbers at approximately 11:00pm and began a technical rescue. By 00:15am, all three parties had been successfully evacuated down off the rock without injury and escorted back to the Bluebell shelter.

Sorry folks, but I have to agree with Majid. My security programme hated this, and a friend had their computer locked up when they tried to watch it on my behalf. (Yup, couldn't get it past my virus checker so asked someone else to try! It locked their system up. Guess who is not a popular little old climber?)

You are incorrect. Yes, maybe your "friends" system is locking up, but it's not because of the mediafire site or the mp4 video.
Do you have the latest version of the flash player installed?
Are you blocking cookies or flash? Mediafire depends on a flash cookie - some security programs are overly paranoid about those and complain/block them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaFire

Since mediafire is a peer-to-peer file sharing site, yes, specific files can contain malware - the video in question isn't one of them and mediafire.com is not a malicious site.

Speak for yourself. Many of us were quite cautious as beginner climbers. It's really not hard to understand your own limitations and work within them, if you have even a vague understanding of the issues involved, and how the world works.

I, for one, am glad they didn't attempt to self-rescue after the storm blew over. And given what we know of them, it's obvious in retrospect that the rescue personnel made the right call in telling them to stay put and going to pick them off. Had they tried to descend on their own, the chances that they would have fucked up and someone would have been seriously hurt or killed is a near-certainty.

GO

I probably thought I was "safe" doing all the stupid things I did when I was young. In retrospect it is a wonder I'm alive today. The problem is that young people don't fully understand the limitations of themselves, their equipment and their environment. For example, I think that one of the best ways to gain knowledge to climb safely is to read accident reports in detail. However I've met many young people who don't like to do so because they reckon it would put them off climbing ! Ignorance is bliss !

The biggest problem of today’s young climbers is they calm to be experienced, but they are not skilled or do they have understanding of the proper use of equipment and climbing rigging. They also desperately need proper multi-pitch training, because they are using gym, and top rope techniques in a very different environment and do not have clue of what they are doing. This picture is from the video. What do you think? Dose this person have the knowledge and skill to be doing multi pitch climbs?
