My niece is just getting into climbing, she's 8. Since her shoe size is so small, most gyms don't have her size. She's about to join the team in her gym (she's a badass!). Her shoe is kids 13, and she's growing.
I was wondering if there is any kid shoe recycling going on here. I'd be happy to buy the shoes (or pay for shipping), but I think paying for climbing shoes, even $40, when the kids will grow out of them before their lifespan is up is a little ridiculous.
Any suggestion?

Having four kids who climb I agree but it doesn't happen. Climbing shoe fit is pretty critical. For the first year, or if she's not very serious, you can probably get away with a recycle (ebay or team-mates) after that, get ready to pony up the cash. The team or gym may offer some discounts, many do. At least girls stop growing younger than boys.
Edit to add: shoes are just the tip of the iceberg, cost-wise, for a serious competitor.

I figured the team and other climbers with kids will be our best resource. I think thought people at RC.com might have some other insight.
I'm a climbing and know the costs of gear, but the competition side is a bit new to me. I'm not sure my sister will be up for years of competitive climbing. I'll be funding most of the gear for outdoor climbing.

I'll say that for many kids the social aspect of kids their own age, on the team, really sucks them into the sport vs. going out with the old farts (myself included). I started doing a lot more sport climbing, indoor and out, and indoor bouldering after the kids started. But the climbing competition environment really beats the hell out of youth soccer and the like. Much better sportsmanship for the most part.
