Two questions.
1.) Anyone play at Twiss Rock at all. Also known as Sunset rock I think. Opinions? I've only done Aid there.
2.) There's an old Quarry south of hwy 5 (Dundas street) off of Kerns road on the east side of the road. It looks chossy, anyone been here?

Myself and a few of my friends usually go out to Twiss once a week for some bouldering. It's got some good range in bouldering climbs and its pretty safe if you take a tumble. Plus if you have rope you can always wander back in to the crevasses that are away from the road. All in all a good area to practice with the more Northern wall being a bit more challenging.
As for the old quarry I haven't heard of it but I'll swing by and take a look.
Just to add about the quarry (It's name KearnsCliff Park). My curiosity got the better of me so I checked it out with a few friends. There is a few nice walls but mainly there is a lot of lose rock. The other problem is there is no real safe footing at the bottom so there is really no area to crash on as well the better walls butt up against some marshy area so they are kinda hard to get at without getting a soaker.
Is there any other sites in the Burlington area that are worth taking a stab at?

Twiss Rock is pretty cool krillen, I climb there with downshift and some other friends. The nice thing about it is if you forget your gear or your climbing with someone new then there's still stuff you can climb. It's like a ski hill, this place has a bunny wall, nice really big jugs and some pretty big holes that you can fit my size 13 sneakers into. Try parking pretty damn tight to the trees as possible, the locals like to speed. If you're looking to climb with someone you can contact either me or downshift, we'll go up with you.

I don't think we should post twiss up. It's nice that not many people know where it is, I mean if someone asks me where it is I'll tell them, but I don't want to show up one day and find the entire rock covered in chaulk from some weener who throws it like it confetti at a wedding.

Twiss is Sunset rock right?
Isn't it in the escarpment guide? I think most people know where it is, it's just not worth the drive out there just for it. The Glen is so close if you're just out for bouldering and most would just go there.

Escarpment guide? Is that a book or a website? If it's a book where can I aquire a copy? Anyway Twiss / Sunset (I think it has a third name) is my primary after work spot since it's the only place I can get to and have an hour or two of light to climb in. I really wish I could make the Glen after work . It's time for me to have another skip work climb at the Glen day in the next few weeks.

There are marked routes at Twiss but I have no details as to what they are and what they are rated. If anyone know them it would interesting to find out.

There are a couple of Ontario guide books floating around like the Escarpment book and the Sport book, there may be a new one as well. Check out MEC, I know they will carry the best selection of guides around here.
"The Escarpment: A Climber's Guide" that's the one I was thinking of. Can't seem to find my copy though

Ok, found it.
There's one tiny little paragraph saying that it's a couple of Km off Derry Rd and that it has several face probs up to 5m with some interesting juggy stuff on the north end.
Or something like that.

It's located on Twiss Road west of Milton, so it is also know as Twiss Rock, or more commonly Sunset rock
I was also interested in the old Quarry in Northwest Burlignton, anybody have any ideas?

I realize Toronto is not too far from my area it just has a big pain in the butt factor when driving there. Although I must say Rockheads is nice but some days I just have to be outdoors.
Sunset Rock, I have always know as Twiss or Manitou Rock. I guess it depends on what circle of climbers introduce you to the area.

That what just my first evaluation I have been back since and there is an ok corner close to Kearns road which isn't too bad but not enough to really entertain yourself. There are a few places where you can top rope but there is a fence (Bruce Trail safety fence I think) in the way.

If anyone wants to climb kearns cliff park just lemme know, Downshift and I have been there a few times and we've got a general feel for the place. It's actually fairly challenging in that if you fall you fall on some pretty mean looking rock, and broken beer bottles. Otherwise there's a fair variety of jugs and nice 2 finger holes. It's a good place to practice, but I wouldn't go there regularly.

last time i was at sunset, a conservation officer kicked me off saying there was "no free climbing of any sort". now, that area is not in a conservation area, but they might own that land. i'm still trying to find out, but they haven't been responding to my emails. as for kerns rd quarry, that access is restricted too. lots of kids have died there. there are some more (tiny) prospect bouldering areas in burly.

Now I've talked to the Halton police on this one. Sunset / Twiss is not conservation land and the according to Halton Regional Police it is not illegal to climb there. Conservation authority does have rights to the area on the other side of twiss by the swap / pond thing. Now it is technically illegal to park in front of Twiss but odds of the bylaw enforcement ever going up there is pretty high. You probably just ran into some jerk on a power trip (rent-a-cop syndrome). C_P is right next time ask for some I.D. (badge number etc.) and ask him to have his office forward you specific information on climbing rules in this area.

has anyone checked out the cave areas at sunset for bouldering? there's some pretty rad overhanging/highball stuff...the landings are just heinous. need to do a little more investigating.

If it's a police officer ask for their hrmis number, and if it's a converservation authority type dude ask for their badge number and ask them to call down to the office and get a copy of the specific document that outlines sunset as being out of bounds.
If they can't provide them either give 'em hell!
