If you do decide to buy some cams you should definitely go out buy some cams. If you decide otherwise then don't.

Shocked

Seriously though, you'll get a ton of recommendations to just go out and buy some BD C4's because that's what everyone else does.

I say think for yourself... learn about the trade-offs for each design, read the reviews, try them out if you can, pick something and learn them inside and out.

For me, I've been using Metolius TCU's and Powercams for 13+ years and recently added the WC Helium Friends in sizes 0, 1, 2, and 3 to cover any doubling needs.

I would suggest looking at the WCHF's and DMM Demon cams as good starter sets.

Good luck.

Ask around where you'll be climbing at most of the time. Try other peoples cam if you can, see what you like or dislike about them. Go to the different brands websites and soak up all the info you can.

BD (.5 - 3) cams are the normal goto anymore and they are nice, but of the 50+ cams I own, only five are BD's. It's all relative, so the more flavors you can try the more likely your to find what fits your tastes and mitts best.

My rack consists of
BD C4 #1-4
and Metolius TCU 1-4
Metelous Master cam 5 and 6.

yes there is some over lap of the BD c4 num 1 and the master cam #5 ; and the BD #2 and master #6, but that because the routs I climb use that cam sizes more.

Any who you will get many many different recommendations. Best as above is go climb with someone that has a rack and get a feel for the size and brands you like and then make you purchase.

Or if you find a standup guy like my self and a mooching buddy (like mine), I provide all the gear and he provides the beer and gas. I am pretty sure he is still getting off cheap.
