Looking to relocate - HELP!

Well dang, it looks like I may need to look for work outside of my comfy little cave up here in northern Minnesota.

So what's the issue you ask? Shouldn't anyplace be better for climbing than northern Minnesota? Oh not so! There is actually a good deal of decent climbing and great backpacking, kayaking, skiing (cc), mountain biking and general outdoor fun found where I currently live.

My question for you fine folks here on RC.com is where would you suggest I look for work that would have at least good climbing and backpacking nearby, say a 2 hour drive?

If it helps I don't climb hard (5.10 trad) and I'm an emerging professional in the field of architecture.

There are so many good options:
Salt Lake City
Boise
Bishop
Multiple Colorado options
...immediately come to mind. There are certainly a wealth of others.

It will really depend on what the options are in your field and what kind of city amenities you might desire.

Thanks!

I'm viewing this list as just a starting point.

Not being an aspiring architect, I have no idea where your potential job prospects might be concentrated. There are lots of places with climbing, but where are the jobs for architects? Narrow this down for us and we may be able to give you some useful input.

Denver, CO
Boise, ID
Lexington, KY
Billings, MO
Las Vegas, NV
Portland, OR
Minneapolis, MN
Sioux Falls, SD
Fargo, ND

I personally would like to avoid super large metro areas though where everyone makes a mass exidous out of town on the weekends (ie Minneapolis MN, Denver CO) and you're stuck in traffic for three hours just to drive 80 miles.

I don't have any experience with the north east and south east so any input on those areas would be a great help.

Great if you like
bugs
humidity
endless rain storms
crappy winter weather

And speaking particularly to the north east, most of the areas where you will likely find work opportunities are
crowded
surprisingly far from climbing and good backpacking
expensive

Areas where there is some demand for my skill set.

Obviously there is no climbing or backpacking there. Tongue

Minneapolis MN is a super large metro area? HA! In your list only Vegas, portland and Denver are large.
