My son recently took a open climb at a climbing wall, and done 3 climbs on 5'10 with no issues. He is asking for his own gear.

To start with, What harness would you recommend for a mid-teen who will be using it for climbing, belaying, and rapelling? He will be using it in the Gym, outside climbing, and rapelling at scout camp.

Any of the name brand harnesses should be fine, just make sure it fits. If you have an indoor climbing gym near that sells gear, go there. The people working there are all climbers, and will have better suggestions and be able to make sure it fits.

If he's still growing then don't feel bad going for a cheaper option.

Harnesses are kinda like shoes in that different bodyshapes/weights find different harness comfortable. You should grab a harness from a store that is either connected to a climbing wall of has a rope from a rafter that you can hang from.

I've made the mistake of buying a harness without hanging in it first and had myself a proper s*** fitting harness.

It may be worth thinking about one of the really-adjustable harnesses (of the type climbing gyms often have) so that, as he grows, the harness will continue to fit him.
