Looking back at our climbing experiences, we learn valuable lessons that could have been helpful earlier in our climbing career.

What's the one thing that you wish you knew before you started outdoor climbing?

Thanks!

Pieter

That it is addictive, and 47 years later I would still be hooked!

Hey kennoyce, That's definitely something nice to learn early on... especially when you get up on the rock. Were you able to stumble upon any helpful resources to learn about anchor cleaning?

No, just eventually saw some other climbers doing it and figured it out.

Just for a little background, when I started climbing we would lead the route to the anchors, then lower off our draws, then hike around to the top of the cliff, find a tree to rap off of, and clean the draws on rappel from the tree. After doing this several times we saw some other climbers clean the anchors and it totally blew our minds!

Here in Richmond,va there is a small 6' pillar that they set up to practice cleaning the anchors and I had a friend show me and I practice it about a dozen time before I went up and did it.

That's nice. I see entirely too many people trying to explain to their friends how to do it when they're 50 feet off the ground and terrified.
