Spring is here!!
Many were at Coopers Saturday. It was balmy and a blast! I wasn't very strong, and it's a good thing the season is young!

What a weekend at the New!! I've never seen such crowds, but everyone was so nice. We still got in all the climbing we wanted.

Met a nice guy from State College at the Mills yesterday. He said there's not many climbers back there. Maybe there're just hard to find...

From greater Johnstown area, I try to boulder every Saturday morning if I can at some nice rocks I found in the area. Pretty much have the place to myself, lots of great rock and some higher stuff if anyone is interested in top rope. I primarily boulder though. Always looking for people to climb with but are hard to find in this area.

Urgent message for all local climbers.
Don't park around the gate for Coll's Cove anymore.
Drive past the gate to the first driveway on the left and park on the lawn. Thank Chuck if you see him.
Supposedly the gas company is doing a big upgrade and will be bringing in big machines soon. It's not safe around the gate, and the lawn is a dream come true. Thank Crazy Pete also.

Hey, I'm a freshman at Clarion and I live in evans city (crannberry twp.). But right now I do a lot of bouldering and I climb on my colleges team. I would really like to get into some more outdoors trad stuff but I dont really have anyone who knows how to do that well. So I'm looking for a mentor for the spring and summer months to kinda help me get started building my rack and learning save techniques.

The thing I have notice about SWPA climbers is they seem to keep to themselves… The climbers in other communities like out west are more untied and are far more willing to share info. They seem to talk less climb more, and are willing climb with others. My guess is because of the volume of well-known classics and ongoing development of new climbs.
With that being said many could argue SWPA has notable climbing right here in our backyard.. hmm. Personally I’m not sure if anything in SWPA compares to out west. But I pretty sure there is some really good stuff all over our neck of the woods and I see no reason to travel every free weekend… (Don’t get me wrong - I travel to climb) I just think there is a ton of local rock and I wish we had a local climbing community full of motivated, friendly climbers willing enjoy it… But that just doesn’t seem to be the case.

Just moved to Lebanon and completely agree. I heard there is bouldering in Mt. Gretna so I know there must be climbers somewhere, but I haven't been able to find them. There used to be a Meetup group for either western or central PA climbers but it fizzled out. It's incredibly frustrating. Where are you, rock climbers?

That's a shame. Hopefully someone motivated will change that. SWPA, and all of PA in general has great rock. The community in Eastern PA where I live is very strong. I'm not sure what central PA is like, but I think the Penn State area has a decent community as well. I hope it improves for you out in SWPA! Help him out guys!

There is definitely good rock all through SWPA, WCPA ect... but climbers are definitely limited and the climbers few that there are as mentioned don't always care to share.
I think of some the problems with sharing climbing locations is that perhaps the people shouldn't be there in the first place so they are a little cautious about spamming the info everywhere and to everyone. ;)
I'm out towards Johnstown area, I tend to boulder because I can do it quickly and locally, not much sport or trad around here but some

We lost a beautiful bolted cliff in Morgantown because of as!@#$%^&* from the ECP. One of them kept leaving his car blocking the road so locals couldn't get to and from their homes. They would leave notes and he would laugh about it. So the owner had the bolts chopped.
Maybe the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh is not to be trusted with nice climbing areas.

it only takes one *** hat to ruin it for everyone unfortunately.
Ohiopyle is still a nice place to climb, something for everyone there, hopefully it lasts.

If anyone lives south of Pgh there is a climbing wall at Cameron Wellness in Washington that is really under used. Good place for winter training anyway. Contact me if you are interested. Thanks.

Hey guys sorry for falling off the face of the planet for the last 4 years. Things have been a bit crazy for me. Got rid of the crazy girlfriend and found a new "normal" one. Have a son and now a stepdaughter now. Life is going much better but time is still tight due to being a stay at home dad and college student. Hope to see some of you this spring on some rocks somewhere.

Hopefully the rocks dry up here quick in SWPA. Like always I get out and about here and there in the greater Johnstown area mainly bouldering. Shoot me a message if anyone is interested or needs info on a place to check out.
I would like to do little expedition in the next few weeks to what seems to be a potentially undocumented climbing location East of Somerset. Will be day type adventure, some hiking, hopefully some climbing. Should be fun, anyone interested in outdoors and hiking let me know. No dates set just yet.

I would be up for some TR at OSP sometime this summer after my gear arrives. Had my last set stolen while I was gone with the Corp. Dang Ex-wives. There is also a bit of bouldering in the shanksville area but most of it would be a no fall zone due to very crap area to lay out pads. Word has it there is a face or three in the game lands around somerset but I have not been able to spend a few days hiking around to find them. I did find what looked to be some bouldering but didn't have a chance to really check it out due to it being deer season and 21' out.
A big thing I think that could help out with climbing in SWPA would be if we helped out keep areas clean maybe even plant some new trees from time to time. Show people in the area that we want to give back and maybe they will be more open to us playing in their backyards.
Just my nub 2cents.
