Piece of leather for edge protection for a rappel rope

Can you use a piece of leather for edge protection on the cliff edge for a static rope during a rappel. Meaning the static rope sets on the leather as it goes over the cliff edge from the master point with the master point 2 or 3 feet back from the edge. Does anyone see an issue with that? And could that be used for a dynamic rope too?
