Another harness thread in the trad section got me to wondering: Harnesses are pretty simple things. I imagine they are really hard to get wrong.

Besides buying a harness that's completely wrong for your body shape, or getting a harness for the wrong purpose (such as a thin sport harness for hanging belays on long multipitches), has anyone ever bought a harness that was simply no good from a design or quality point of view?

I don't think so. I think as long as they have a UIAA or CE certification, you're buying a good product. In other words, I wouldn't buy a harness from the "Bob's Gear, Inc." line.

I haven't ever heard of anything, but Roc T'eryx harnesses put their gear loops too far back.

I wanted to comment that a cut (exact sizing) can be bad even when it is a high quality harness but I guess that falls in to the "body shape" thing. Of course, if two harnesses from different manufacturers are supposed to fit the exact same sized person and one fits well and the other does not, the badly fitting harness is "bad" for the specific person. Too hard to know if it's the harness or the person without trying on numerous other similar models.

YES!!

I bought a BD alpine bod as a lightweight backup harness, and every single time I've climbed in it, it has mangled my manhood! It's a good thing I fathered two children before I started using it!
