I just did my first competition yesterday, and I had a pretty good time. It was an ABS redpoint format, which was cool because it was low key.
However, there are some out there who prefer a more regulated competition. How do you guys feel about ABS comps? Do you like them, do you hate them, and why?

I like ABS but I feel that they need just a little more format. The redpoint format is cool though, its nice to just show up to a comp and climb like it was just a normal night of climbing. I really like, yet also dislike the redpoint format. It makes it really easy to compete but I like flash or onsite comps better. I just like the extra feeling of having to do that certain route at flash or onsite comps.
All in all though, I like the ABS.

ABS is awsome.
i like the laid back format, where everyone just chills and climbs. my last comp is on Dec. 8 it should be fun. ive been to a hanful. there awsome.

Except when the routes suck all form of ass (which they did on Sunday).

American Bouldering Series, I've been in a few of their comps, got 4th in them all. Dang kids who can climb V9...
I'm not a boulder climber anyways.
They use a "red point" format, there are typically 52 routes, at the ones I've been at. They range from v0 to v10. Each route is numbered, and lets say a V6 is alittle easier then another V6 there. That V6 has less points then the harder V6. All in all, it all goes together like this, and every route has it's own number of points, and depends on how hard it is for the rating.

Certainly, talons.
The American Bouldering Series is a casual bouldering competition series. They use two formats, the redpoint and the on-sight format, but the redpoint is the more common format. I think the onsight is used only for finals and whatnot.
THe redpoint format is considered casual because there are no judges and you don't have a certain schedule to follow. You just kinda wander around the gym and get whatever routes you want. If you redpoint a boulder problem, you have to have a witness sign off on your climb, which makes the honor system very important. Generally, you get three hours with which to complete as many problems as possible. At the end, you take your top four or five (or sometimes up to ten, depending on the comp) problems, add them up, and the highest point winner wins.

definately get into ABS comps if you want to start competing. I think the are the most fun indoor comps and have a realy relaxed environment unlike JCCA.
