On Thursday I spoke with someone at the Harrisburg Ranger Station about climbing in the Shawnee National Forest. I was told, "Our current policy is to discourage any rock climbing on National Forest land east of Carbondale. Climbing on forest land west of Carbondale is currently acceptable." I didn't press the issue by asking what "discourage" means. Has anone else heard this, or know what this means?

I think the ranger was misinformed. I'm checking with the midwest coordinator for the Access Fund, who is a local and has a great longstanding relationship with the various authorities there. I will, or he will, give an update here with correct info soon. Isn't "west of Carbondale" mostly Missouri?

I hope that is the case. There isn't much west of Carbondale except for this. Scary, huh?!

That is why I climb in a gym. J/K. I am very concerned about this issue, since I am considering moving down to that area next year (please, don't ask why anyone would move to southern Illinois. It's a long story)

Dana, I haven't heard back from the Access Fund guy, yet, but I feel completely confident that the ranger was misinformed. Sure, there are some areas that are posted for NO CLIMBING, but Mnutz can fill you in better on which ones and where those are. The main areas of Giant City, Ferne Cliff State Park, Jackson Falls, Cedar Bluff, and Draper's Bluff are all as accesible as the guidebook presently indicates, and the info on this site also indicates. Hey, if I could move to Carbondale, I would. I like the small-college-town feel, with all that outdoors stuff to do within minutes of "downtown". And, the cost-of-living is significantly cheaper than St. Louis. I'd at least like to but some untillable -"good hunting land" they call it- property down there, so I'd have a place to camp, and eventually build a small cabin or house.
