AUGUST 1ST, 2002----When Duane Raleigh and Quent Williams resigned from their respective positions as Editor and Production Manager with Climbing Magazine, they left without regrets. They had something else in mind… like purchasing the competing publication Rock & Ice, relocating the headquarters from Boulder to small-town Carbondale, CO and engaging in spirited competition for readers and respect against the publication they’d worked for years to improve. Raleigh and Williams resigned from Climbing on May 10 to form Big Stone Publishing. Days later, Big Stone purchased the assets of North South Productions including niche publications Rock & Ice and Trail Runner magazine. In mid-May, four other Climbing employees resigned to work with Raleigh and Williams at Big Stone and a number of employees at Climbing were promoted to fill the positions. But that thorn in the side remains regarding the nature of Raleigh and Williams’ resignations. On June 10, corporate owner of Climbing, Primedia, filed a suit in Denver County’s District Court naming Big Stone, Raleigh and Williams as defendants. The suit seeks in excess of $75,000 and charges the named parties with a number of allegations including: · Spreading rumors that Climbing Magazine was going to fold due to economic difficulties, thereby, “Waging a systematic misinformation campaign about Climbing in an effort to cripple the magazine.” · Making recommendations that Climbing Magazine resort to cheaper paper with the intent to degrade the aesthetics and apparent value of the publication. · Using confidential Climbing Magazine resources like advertising schedules, pricing and contacts to the advantage of Big Stone and Rock & Ice. · Hiring Climbing Magazine staff members in a blatant effort to cripple the circulation and quality of the publication.
UPDATE! JANUARY 13TH, 2003----Planetfear.com reports that the law suit between the owners of Climbing and Rock & Ice has been dismissed. The suit dismissal puts an end to the controversy that started when former Climbing Editor Duane Raleigh abandoned Climbing to found Big Stone Media and buy out Rock & Ice.
