Hey this is my first post, so bare wit me.

I have entered into my first gym bouldering competition, and as I read the little thing saying that people were put into different catagories based on ability it got me thinkin. Am I a beginner? Or am I a moderate climber? If anyone has any suggestions on how to rate ones self, let me know.

If you climb v4, you are an intermediate (moderate) climber.

Anything less and you are a beginner.

Karl

Most comps will let you know what division to sign up for based upon your ability. Like Lox said..they may place you in intermediate if you climb between a V4 and V6. All comps are different. Goog luck and climb hard...let us know how you do!

Does anybody know what the grade range for advanced in ABS comps is? I saw that some of you said that above V4 is intermediate so i was wondering what the grade is that marks the beggining of advanced. thanks for your help.

Check out www.rockcomps.com I think that Scott actually details the process of holding a comp. Hope that helps.

well comp routes are different that "real ratings" but i would say that if you climb v3 or 4 go in advanced. i donmt know about you but whhen i go to comps i compete in advanced and place 2nd and i climb all the v3s. but i would check out who your competeing against first. it helps if you have been competeing a while though. you will get that hagn of it soon.

I actually just went through my first comp last saturday. I entered as an intermediate, since I could barely do V3s at the gym. I was able to send most of the problems, a few advanced problems evaded me. I ended up getting 4th in my division.

A suggestion would be, that if you feel that you can do the high-end problems at the comp, request to be moved into the advanced category.

Here's another suggestion, time was a big issue for me. If I had another hour, I would've been satisfied. Find the problems with the shortest lines.

I'm going in my first comp next month. Its an onsight comp. I've been climbing for about a year and have onsighted 5.11s a few times. I was wondering, since I haven't been in a comp before, that I should go in the bottom grade and work my way up. Would people be annoyed if i went in that grade and onsighted everything and won???

For males, if you can boulder V3-V5, that's intermediate. For females, that's advanced. Not to be sexist or anything, that's just a trend I see.

What's the fun if you can onsight everything. Enter the category that you think that you can do around half the routes, that way you can climb with people worse than you, and people better than you.
