I'll be there for the 2nd time. You don't need a guide man. Just go to where all the people are! You'll have a blast!

Don't bring a girlfriend... don't get caught with glass in the street (get a plastic go-cup from the bartender)... don't fight... don't attempt to throw beads into the tubas at the parades (that one cost me a shot with a nightstick)... do whatver you can to get a coconut from Zulu, you wouldn't believe what you can trade it for... don't eat the Lucky Dogs no matter how good they smell... beware the Hurricane as it is the path to the gutter...and whatever you do don't get caught pissing in public...
....if you do get cuffed and tossed in OPP you are screwed, you won't get out until well after Fat Tuesday. Mardis Gras is great dirty fun and I'm always amazed that the city can hold such an event without MAJOR trouble, just steer clear of the NOPD. You may find that it eventually turns into a giant quest for the next urinal. Learn how to walk and pee at the same time; it could keep you a free man. I spend a lot of time in New Orleans, feel free to PM me.

Way to go Brad, You nailed the essence of Mardi Gras. I used an alpine climbing analogy when I replied...
If you don't like being cold and miserable for days on end - don't go alpine climbing.
If you don't like getting hammered, wearing a costume, staring at titties and dancing for days on end - don't go to Mardi Gras. Other than that, it's a wonderful time.

ahh mardi gras...

If you're going for the first time, follow the advice above regarding police, breasts, and public urination; it is sound advice.

If you've been before, and are planning to go back...WHY? For boobs? That's pretty sad. They are usually of inferior quality anyway. For booze? please. For the people? God I hope not.

Do yourself a favor and wait two months for Jazz Fest instead. The crowds are less...what's the word?...idiotic.

Then again, if you like the smell of vomit and pee...to each his own.

Ah yes, the smell of pee....come on! Mardi Gras never gets old. Let me add another piece of advise. Bring "day time" shoes and "night" shoes. At the end of the trip (even if only 2 nights), be prepared to throw out your night shoes. They will get liquids and solids alike that you just wont want to bring back home with you in your bag...even if they are sealed up! Anyway, Mardi Gras is way cool. BTW, put a rubber band around your wallet so you know if someone is picking your pocket...it works.

Everyone should experience the maddness that is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. At least once. You may have to go twice if you blot out all memory of the first trip via excessive drinking.

Yes there are hundreds of pota-pottys, but there are thousands, hundreds of thousands of people... the coconut thing comes from the Zulu parade, all through Mardis Gras there are parades and they throw things off the floats. At least check the parades for a little while, Zulu and Bacchus being two of the best, the amount of work that goes into these things is astounding... then you can go back to getting sloshed. At zulu they throw coconuts to the lucky few, catch one and you can trade it for more than just boobs...
previous posters extolled the virtues of jazzfest and I wholeheartedly agree, but everybody needs to see Mardis Gras at least once....

Yeah Brad really hit the place on the nose. I was born there, and although Mardi Gras can be great I guess it really just depends on how you view the place. If you've never been then I can see how appealing the place can be; but once you go you'll understand why the people that live there clearn out.

If you really want to see some madness maybe you remember the Real World: New Orleans. Well, that only touched what it's like.

Just take Brad's advice and try to go with a friend who's been before; they can usually teach you a few things. Also, take the glass container thing seriously. The police are on horses there and have no problem hading out MIP's and the like. You'd think with so many people that your chances of getting one would be slim, but just tell yourself that when they're writing the ticket.

Have fun; come back and tell us what you did (if you can remember , and what you thought of the place.

- Matt.

Nope, you should be ok. There's hundreds of thousands of people, so the chances the police will ask you for yours is slim.

And everywhere else, nah, it's pretty nonexistant.

so the obvious question is what differentiates a zulu cocoanut from a regular cocoanut? where do the parades start? why not just go there and cop a cocoanut for twenty or something? this place is gonna be hilarious

Don't get too worked up over the coconuts guys, go and have fun... every time I go down there I find something good. Last time I was randomly looking through the phone book and found a place listed as "bar and canoe rental"... as in go there, get sloshed, rent a canoe and go paddle around the friggin' swamp looking for gators while telling yourself, "I'm gonna get a cool SCAR!"... stupendous... you just couldn't do that in California.
(I was, sadly, unable to get the cool scar... I did find that alligators eat cheetos though)

The IDing there is a joke. I walked up to a cop (underage) and asked for directions. Yes, I know that was dumb...but I wasn't exactly "all there." Anyway, they have bigger fears to worry about than you drinking. When I was there, the cops had to get in a line with horses and move the croud out of an area. Why you ask? Because Girls Gone Wild was in that area and the boobs (and other parts) were being flashed like crazy. Their is nothin like getting puched by the side of a horse nearly twice as tall as you!!! Goin' again...its gunna be great!

I looked up Zulu coconuts, and they look like they're not the fruit, but the beads.

The Zulu Coconut is the throw of all throws. In the early 1900s real coconuts were thrown from the floats but that came to a halt as lawsuits started popping up from coconut injuries. In the 80s they switched to beads. I lived in LA for about 7 years. If you love to party but want a smaller crowd, head NW to Shreveport. The Krew of Centar and Gemini Parades are a lot of fun too. Still lots of beer, beads and boobies. Plus the bars stay open til 5:00 or 6:00 AM. You still have to get a taste of New Orleans though. Try some gator on a stick.
