About himalayan climbing, and Everest climbing in particular, "Into thin air" is a great book. Of course, there are many many great books out there.
Just one advice:
IMHO, Reinhold Messner is the greatest climber in mountainering history, BUT HE IS A VERY POOR WRITTER !!!!!
So, read about Messnerīs climbs, but if possible try a book not written by himself

I am in definate agreement about Messner's writing. I've been in the process of reading one of his books for two months now. Its like a chore.

John Sherman's "Stone Crusade: A Historical Guide to Bouldering in America" is a must-read. If you love bouldering, it is informative, inspiring and, at times, hysterical. The story about Bob Williams epoxying his hand to Right Side of Red Wall on Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder made my side hurt ... enjoy
