I'm planning on visiting Hyalite for ice climbing in Feb.This will be my first time at Hyalite. I'll be driving from California. I'm fairly confused about the approach. Are we talkin' driving a 4WD, or using a snowmobile, or what?
Has there been a recent closure that has complicated the approach?
By the way, I'm still looking for a partner. See my post. Thanks, JMB
I'd apprieciate any info.

This is my first season here, but I've already hit up a bunch of the ice. My understanding is this: until mid-January, the trailheads are approachable by pretty much any type of automobile. After this, it is hit-or-miss. After a big storm, only incredibly burly vehicles will make it back there. But once a few of those have gone back, the road starts to pack down again and average cars can make it again. At least this is my understanding. My vehicle is capable in many types of weather, so I'm happy....

In the past, the road has deteriorated as the season progressed and the snowpack accumulated. The road was plowed two times last winter, and snowmobiles were a much easier way to get to the trailhead. The word is this year (from Conrad Anker himself) that money has been budgeted for eight plowings. That should help accessibility for 4x4s and perhaps even cars. Hope this helps.
