Just checked it out this afternoon... Island Rock is big; it's essentially the entire inside of a warehouse. They have a LOT of stations (over 30, off the top of my head) and high walls, with routes ranging from 5.5s to 5.11s. There are routes on the traditional wall areas, but there are also routes on two different pillars that are ceiling-high. They have a decent bouldering area, with set routes from V-0 to V10. They have only a couple of small traverse bouldering routes. Overhangs, crack work, and lots of different routes to explore, a full-sized changing area with lockers, new cushioned flooring (plus crash pads for the bouldering area) and a seating area just off the climbing floor make this probably the best rock gym in the area. Certainly MUCH better than any in NYC, and better than Go Vertical in Stamford except for bouldering facilities (Stamford has a huge, freestanding boulder with an actual cave inside). I haven't checked NJ Rock Gym, so no comment there. I'd be happy to meet up to partner, if you'd like. Tai

There are no other climbing gyms out on Long Island, to my knowledge. The closest indoor climbing is either in Manhattan, or perhaps Stamford, CT. T

The parental units still live on Long Island, so I get up to Island Rock a few times a year. All around a pretty good gym - they FINALLY got rid of the awful pea-gravel floor, which is a MAJOR improvement to that place. My only gripe ..... they don't seem to clean their holds nearly enough. Every time I have ben there all the holds were "slicker-n-snot", unless the hold you were grabbing just happened to be new out of the box. Would be a VERY good gym if they cleaned their holds a bit more ....

I usually go to earth treks in maryland but i went on vacation for a week and spent a day there. The gym is nice and i have been told by many people better since they got rid of the peat-gravel. All I can say is the people are extremely nice and laid back the day iwent i asked if i could do some leading and i didnt know that i would need my own rope, which i didn't have. There was no one else in the gym so one of the guys that worked there offered to drive home and get his own rope. Its a really nice gym, plus they have a sauna which was something i never expected to find in a climbing gym. ~Sarah

My girl and I started rock climbing at Island Rock not to long ago. I was really happy with the start-up lesson and little package deal. More over, the staff has always been very helpful. I'm a member there now and I climb about 3 times a week. No matter when I go, I'm always greeted with a "what's up! How's it go'en!" It's true there are day camps and stuff there during the early summer days, but, the reality is they have to keep the place running. At night, however, it's almost always climbing "community" people. Allot of them are willing to share tips and techniques with you, too! For someone just getting started on the 5.6-5.7's this is AWESOME. One other thing too... The male population shows a good amount of respect for the girlies. There's no rudeness, ridiculous flirting or unnecessary crap. Everyone's there to CLIMB and that's what makes it a cool place. Just my thoughts... (sorry for the ramble!)
