Come'ere, girls and boys, and gather 'round your good ol' Uncle Stu. I got somethin' for ya! Naw, it ain't candy. Naw, it ain't a toy neither. Naw it ain't - Hey! Do you kiss your mamma with that dirty mouth? You watch what you say now, 'less you want me to go git ma switch.

A story? Waaayel, yer gittin' warmer than a cat got it's tail caught in the wood stove door.

It's another right fine article by yers truly! Can you say "article"? I reckoned you could. It's about how to keep from gettin' yer little noggins nicked by rockfall when ya go climbin'!

Piano Man, you might might as well just go on and skip it. I don't reckon there's much rockfall in them gyms where you hang out, 'less the routesetter drops a hold on you! Haw haw.

O.K., we'll see ya later. When ya git a chance, come visit ol' Uncle Stu down at

I'm just posting this to bump the topic back up. I know, I'm a jerk! But seriously, I do want all the newbies here to read it. I see too many near misses.

Stu,

It seems to me that you are sending mixed messages about this helmet issue. In your article, you wrote
Quote:Rule One: Wear a helmet!

Rule Two: See rule one!

However, in the "Why don't you wear a helmet" topic, you wrote
Quote: I don't use a helmet as much as I should. It has nothing to do with the dork factor - where I climb, there's a good bit of loose rock, and when you see guys/gals on serious, hard trad routes, they almost always wear helmets.

How can you expect people to take your article seriously, when you admit that you don't follow those same rules?

You're absolutely right, Dana. I am a hypocrite. But I never said I always wore a helmet, did I? How does this affect my credibility?

I urge all of you not to smoke cigarettes. I'm very, very serious, and for good reason. I myself do smoke, however.

As my ol' Daddy used to say, "Do as I say, not as I do."

And really, my Rule 1 is directed at less experienced climbers. I see newbies all the time, just hanging out in places where they stand a good chance of getting creamed. It takes experience to fully recognize and evaluate the risk. Frankly, I have that experience, and I wear my dome when the risk is clearly high. Do I err on the side of convenience and comfort at times? Yep, 'fraid so.

Stu

Well, I'm a hypocrite, too, so don't feel bad. There are plenty of things I would tell people not to do, and yet I still do those things myself.

By the way, do you climb at Seneca w/o a helmet? I climbed there once, before I owned a helmet, and I bought one as soon as I got back from that trip, because that place freaked me so much. Man, you're pretty brave not to wear a helmet there. (not meant as an insult, just a statement of opinion)

Peace,
Dana
