I have been exposed to rock climbing for about 4 years but have only climbed a total of maybe 24 hours. mainly because I have no equipment and there are no gyms nearby. no to mention we have no rocks here in Ohio. we do have a 25-30 foot gorge. I can climb a 5.8. i am only 4'11". this really restricts my ability to not reaching holds. what are some good techniques I can use that will help me. I am only familiar with the mantle and dyno move, although ive only ever tried the mantle. I have good balance and am fairly light weight. please help me. P.S. Do you think a 5.8 for a 4'11" guy is like maybe a 5.10 for a tall dude? Work with me guys.

Ditto that ditto. I'm shorter than everyone I climb with and they have a hard time keeping up most times. Work on overall techninque and upper body strength. There is no 1 move that will let you make long reaches, but if you are strong enough you might find holds that others choose not to use. Other than that, find a hold for your right foot that will hold your toes on edge, and streeeeeetch! And grunt on the hard moves! Make that 5.9 move sound like a 5.11!

Mayby I just have bad balance but... I'm just over 6 feet and many times I wish I were shorter. It's hard to describe, but sometimes if you're shorter, you would be able to use holds LOWER which I can't because it throuws me off balance to reach something HIGHER. if that made any sense at all... ~Arnold

As previously mentioned, the more you climb the better you technique will get. I always try to keep one saying in mind though;"Trust your gear, lose the fear." The more you trust your gear and the less fearless you are, the more likely it will be that you will try for the harder holds.

You'd be surprised how much climbing can be done on buildings. This is how you're gonna get better till you can move somewhere where there's rock (don't try california, tho; it's way too crowded out here, and there's almost no rock at ALL!!). And remember that Lynn Hill is about your height.
