You're not stupid..your smart for asking.. that's how you learn. Sport climbing is where you carry quickdraws to clip into bolts that have been drilled into the rock. Trad is where you carry cams that are inserted into holes and cracks in the rock.. and expand to stay in place.

Basically. Sport is climbing using pre-installed pro whether it's bolts or other pro that you place before you begin the climb. Traditional is placing the pro as you climb. That can be cams as previously stated, or any other form of passive or active pro. Then there is aid climbing, where you place your pro and climb on it instead of the rock. And of course there's top-roping.

The main difference is one of risk: Sport does all it can to make climbing a purely physical endeavour with as little risk as possible involved (pre-placed, bombproof bolts to protect a fall) while Traditional climbing involves facing the climb on its own terms: ground-up ascents using only the natural features for placing protection gear (nuts, camming devices, tricams etc... for cracks; slings for trees or horns of rock). In traditional climbing the placement of protection gear is as much a part of the climb as the moves involved in the climbing itself...also, the consequences of badly placed gear could be severe injury or even death which puts trad climbing out of some people's comfort zone.
