Ok I want to go climbing but unfortunately my friends are just starting out. How can I catch them up to speed without them losing out on the basics and saftey but still learning the fastest?

homes your noth gonna like my answer but it will work well or at least it has in the long run. cause you gotta remember it takes time, you dont wanna rush them stand a better chace of injury. my advice is to take them to your local gym and hook them up with someone who has been teaching awhile. not saying you cant teack them and teach them well, but alot of times some one who has experence teaching tends to know a few tricks and they'll leave knowing more than they'll ever need to know. but the best way to get better is to climb, and to help them i wouldnt put them on anything but slabs and vertical to work there footwork. once they got foot work then break them into over hung stuff if thats the route you wanna take. just remember it will take time, just remember have fun, peace.

I agree with the guy above, but I would add that you have them (and yourself) read up on climbing, especially belaying and rope management, before you take them outside with a guide or to a gym.

Yeah- bouldering and slabs. Work on technique instead of strength, seems slower but WAY better in he not-so-long-run. Gotta learn to climb like a girl.

I guess I'm glad I hooked up with someone who realized that we all go at different speeds, and felt no need to rush me, when I started climbing. Most people aren't used to using their muscles the way climbing demands, so obviously climbing is the best way to get someone "up to speed" on climbing. And the fastest way to turn someone off of climbing is to be selfish and impatient while they're learning. Please make sure your're "qualified" to teach your buddies about climbing; it can be a good idea for them to learn from someone else, so that what is learned from different sources can be compared, and if there are any gaps in the information and procedures, not everyone will be subject to the same mistakes and risks. Keep it fun, and they'll come back for more. [ This Message was edited by: jds100 on 2001-12-27 07:16 ]

I agree take them to the Gym and teach better saftey and lets you climb too. Also you might hook up with a climber chic who can teach you a thing or two about being on rope.
