directions: from 81 (harrisonburg, VA) take rt 33 w follow around the court house in harrisonburg...you will travel approx. 60 miles on rt 33...it takes 2 more turns (but clearly marked)..stay on 33 til just past Judy Gap (and the Nelson Kiosk) take a left onto rt 28..less than 1/2 mile left onto Nelson Gap Road...follow the signs to the parkinglot... Lookie here, please print this: Ya'll need to check this space for updates right up to when you leave. THERE WILL BE A MANDATORY MEETING FOR NEW ARRIVALS on Sat. and Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This will be before you venture out into the preserve. IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW THIS, YOU SHOULD: WE DON'T GUARANTY ANYBODY'S SAFETY WHILE THEY ARE ON THIS PROPERTY. WE DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING! Bring your 1st aid kits. Coach PM'd me with a question on arrival and parking. I hope to know later today the shape of the driveway up to the cabins, if I can get outta here. Could range from steep, narrow, muddy but fine to slick, snowy, and very scary if you're not used to it. 4WD definitely required. If you haven't heard about Annie's previous wreck, ask her. Parking is at a premium at the cabins. Plus, the fewer vehicles we have up there, the more room there will be for tents in the immediate area. There is also the idea of containing people to the mountain while partying. Which is smart, assuming we can pull it off logistically. So basically Annie and I made the rule way back when that there was no parking up there. Let's do it this way. If the turnout is decent, the VAST majority of people will have to park in the well-marked parking area in the valley, off Nelson Gap Road. In the unlikely event that it fills up, there are good spaces out along the road near the entrance station. From the parking area, the walk to the cabins is about 1/4 mi. steady uphill. Don't walk up the driveway; use Pierson's trail, which is well marked near the bottom of the driveway. If you are fast and light, just grab your stuff and trot on up. You'll see the cabins on the left, near the intersection with Gracie's trail. I'll be driving a white GMC pickup. I will shuttle anybody up or down. Hopefully we can put together a small cadre of skilled and equipped drivers to assist with this, especially during peak arrival times. If you arrive late and all else fails, camp down in the parking area until we can relocate you. AFTER DARK, NOBODY SHOULD TRY TO DRIVE TO THE CABINS THAT DOESN'T KNOW THE ROAD. ORGANIZERS: People who are bringing tons of stuff to help out, we'll let you come up, at least to unload, if it's feasible. Don't do it if you doubt your vehicle or ability. Try to touch base with somebody in the know before coming up. If you pull shuttle duty you get to park at the cabins. THIS WILL BE A LIMITED NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE DRIVEN THE ROAD AND SPOKEN TO ME, ANNIE, CAPTAINPROZAC OR SOMEBODY THAT SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. FYI, we have never had a break in in the main parking area. The foregoing was not intended to constitute either a representation or warranty as to future events. After about noon today, I may or may not have an internet connection. I will be reachable by phone in WV at 304-567-3169. Feel free to call and let us know your arrival time and we will try to coordinate with you. BTW, that phone number will likely be the only way to get a message to you while you're on the mountain! Don't count on being able to use a cell phone or pager. If you have a global satellite uplink, bring it. This is going to be serious business. If anybody is seen horsing around or being stupid, especially with a vehicle, they are gone. _________________ [indigo]some music to get you in the mood...[/indigo] [firebrick]FOOD THREAD[/firebrick] http://www.nelsonrocks.org./images/ad_banner.gif great job PETE!!! Well I came across a climbing bum, he was walking along the road and I asked him tell where are you going, this he told me: Well, I’m going down to Ooze's farm, going to join in a RC.com bash. Gonna climb and smoke some hash, and set my soul free. We are bored, we're sick of winter, we are tired of Annie's naggin', and we got to get ourselves out for some craggin'. Well, then can I walk beside you? I have come to join the gatherin'. And I'm sick and tierd of all the RC.com blatherin'. And maybe it's the time of year, yes, and maybe cuz I lost my tan. And I can't find my #2 cam but life is for learning. We are bored, we're sick of winter, we have bought our season passes, and we hope to get some sun and not freeze our a*sses. By the time we got to Nelson, we were half a hundred strong, and everywhere was a bong and can of whipped cream. And I dreamed I saw bunch of drunk fools walking slacklines in the sky, And I better not get too high or I won't go climbin. This is crazy, it's still winter, but at least our butts aren't draggin, So let's layer up some fleece and do some craaaa, ggiiii, iiii, iinnnn.... http://www.wvclimbing.com/images/oozestock.jpg? Hey people, I just wanted to let everyone know that the deal for getting your season pass for the via ferrata, at $67.50, will be off on March 7, 2003. We have decided that we have given you all enough time to send in checks and that it will be only fair to make the people that show up at the gathering, without their passes paid for ahead of time, pay the full $75 that it costs to have a season pass. Hopefully, not many of you will have ta do this, but I have a good idea of how much money we will be getting if all the people that haven't paid, show up and want a season pass. So, I want to see those checks coming in! We only have 2 weeks left people. Thank you for your cooperation. :) ! Gracie

Sitting here just over the mountains from NRP/Seneca/Germany Valley... surfing for weather/ground condition reports. How's the Preserve roadway and parking holding up to the rising water? If any reconstruction or prevention needs to be done, please PM/page me ASAP... I know they just moved the drive but not where the new entrance is in relation to the creek.... Anne... did you lose All your numbers or just under this ID?

Ronin - don't know as of right now. Pendleton County was west of the heaviest rainfall totals, wasn't it? The parking area is the only thing really vulnerable, IMO. All depends, I guess. Be a drag if the new culvert blew out. Why, are you in excavation? My basement flooded yesterday. It wasn't the precip, it was a busted pipe. No water till tomorrow. I don't mess with plumbing. Sun's out in MD, but the wind's a-howlin'. Hope the bridge don't blow down. Captainprozac can play a mean banjo, but he's kinda shy about it.

ooze- I've been known to dig myself into a few holes- Actually, I am a carpenter, painter, electrician, and concrete finisher, among a lot of other hats I've worn, over the years. (I'll be among the first in the volunteer for renovations after the gathering...) The thought came up talking about flooding in shenandoah and the surrounding regions, back in 96, which this weather seems to be a carbon copy of, in many respects. I remember that the road into Franklin was AMAZING! By extension, I thought of Nelson... maybe because boulderinganne or her evil twin had mentioned something about it, as well... and because I know how many times the road back there in Germany Valley has become an alternate bed for the North Fork... Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Thanks. Looks like flooding is expected in Franklin along the South Branch. It's getting colder with light snow falling, though, which is a good sign (slows the melt).
