Buy a copy of "MOUNTAINEERING, The Freedom of the Hills" printed by Swan Hill Press. If you can't afford to buy it, marry someone who ownes it. It covers all types of climbing AND MUCH MUCH MORE! NOW HOW MUCH WOULD YOU EXPECT TO PAY?? Umm....sorry. getting a bit excited there, Actually you would pay a bit more than $19.95 for this book. It cost me NZ$70 a few years ago but worth every penny.

I agree with socialclimber I lived by that book when I was starting. I still go throuhg it about once a month and read some of the chapters.
My advice would be, Dont get frustrated, all that you put into climbing will come back to you in the end.

I agree. I got a book before I gor my gear.
If it is possible, try and get any rock climbing book that Garth Hattingh wrote.
Garth is South African. His books are brilliant.

Hey Everyone!
Well, I dont have it, so I am going out right now to get "Freedom of The Hills". But since I dont have it, my advice to new climbers, especially guys, has to be to focus on technique NOT strength. I guess that eventually you need both, but learning bad technique makes it really hard once you get to the point that strength just isnt enough anymore (for me that was about 5.11, but its probably different for everyone). Now my whole training focus is to learn to climb like a girl! Good luck everyone- gotta go get that book now!

I have to ammend pushfurther's advice, which I agree with, but I think needs to be a little bit more specific. Hope you don't mind, pushfurther . . .
Use the rating system as a learning tool, not as a way to measure your climbing performance against your ego. Do not define yourself by the rating you climb, and do not take the numbers too seriously. They are just about the best tool I know of to get better at climbing, but if you take them to heart (or to ego) when you are just starting out, you can start a lifelong battle with the numbers, one which will probably slow down your climbing progress and exponentially increase your frustration with your climbing performance.

This is how I'm doing it presently:
1) Be born. Grow up and become interested in in climbing, hopefully B4 you're fully grown.
2) Read everything U can on climbing and outdoor stuff in general, esp if you wanna do more than just rockclimb. Freedom o the hills is good. There are others to read, too.
3) Do a little climbing where/when you can with people who are safe.
4)Become Obsessed with climbing. Find a guru. Not a self proclaimed one. A real one. He/she has to have climbed in a wide variety of forms for at least ten years.
5) Shut up and listen/watch.
6) Move to the mountains and get a new career, like carpentry, biology, guiding, or unemployment. Or a combination of these.
7) Become a guru over the next 50 years. Climb as much as you possibly can. Listen/watch the mountains, (the final Guru).
Die a peaceful old age death.
9) Return to step 1) above.

Buy what you need, not what you want; research things- borrow when you can! And above all - don't let your climbing become all about the toys. I'm not saying skimp on the gear (your life depends on it) but don't use it as a crutch. They're there to help you climb, not subsitute for the effort you should put in to do it. ...if that makes sense ...

Consider a class. Keep on the lookout for an experienced mentor. Learn, learn, learn, ask a lot of questions.
Get out as often as you can. Take some road trips with good friends. Possibly visit some of the people on this site in their various states (of mind).
Get on different types of rock. Try trad, sport, aid, etc.
Have fun and be safe.
