Okay!
I know youu might not bieleve me but,my shoulder pops on my and hurts sometimes. And this started today. What should I do?

Nothing. Mine does the same thing. What the hell can you do? I like making my girlfriend put her ear on my shoulder and I give er a big pop... I don't know if you have the same case as I do, but mine is a result from two different football injuries. On two seperate accasions I pulled every tendon and ligament in my shoulders, both of em. Now I can move them a little too freely because my tendons are stretched out.

I've never really thought about it, but if this is a major problem for you... I'm sure a doctor could take out part of your tendon/ligaments in your shoulder to make it a tighter fit. That is what they did for my friends knee.

The correct answer is not "nothing". The best thing, the obvious thing, to do is to see a doctor, preferably a sports physician. (If you go to an orthopedic surgeon, they may be more, or first, inclined to want to operate. Maybe not, but a general sports physician will probably have a different orientation.) You will probably be instructed to lay off a bit, and then work on some physical rehabilitation.

Depending on the nature of the injury or cause of the pain and popping, you may want to look for shoulder strengthening exercises, but that's probably going to be some time down the line.

good response JDS. 'Doing Nothing' is a good way to end up not being able to climb. In addition, I recommend Yoga as a way to do rehab, when you get to that point. But 1st, quit climbing for awhile, see the doc, and either 1)eat your glucosamine/chondroitin supplements Or 2)eat alot of gristle.... or 3) do both.

if you're shoulder is 'clicking', or 'snapping' rather than 'popping out of place', then most likely you have a muscular imbalance. climbers are known to develop large imbalances in their shoulders/arms due to the repetitive actions and strains. sometimes it's your bicep that is too tight, and it pulls the head of the humurus right up into your socket. when you rotate your shoulder, the head of your humurus is clunking and grinding against your shoulder socket. this sort of injury is relatively minor if you pay attention to it, try and stretch out the muscles, and do exercises to balance the muscles in the arms and shoulders (push vs. pull muscles). if it doesn't go away, it's time to see a athletic therapist/physiotherapist. this is much easier to heal and fix than if it's actually popping out of place, in which it would probably be a sublaxation or even dislocation. but the pain difference between the two (muscular imbalance vs. dislocation)is huge. if it's a sublaxation, or more so a dislocation, you'll probably not be able to climb at all, and possibly rolling on the floor from pain when it happens.

i forgot to mention i'm speaking from experience. and luckily it's not a sublaxation/dislocation. i'm still not climbing after 2 months, but i'm leaving for new zealand in a month! i hope santa brings me a new shoulder for christmas. or some magic elixir to dull the pain...

My shoulder does the same thing. It started one day while doing pullups. I did the first 20 with no problems, but 21-26 my shoulder started making popping noises and it was very painful, so I had to stop. I tore a rotator in my shoulder a few months ago, and I think that may have something to do with it... I still haven't really seen a doctor about it.

there are SO many things going on in the shoulder (it's really quite impressive), which means that there's so much to go wrong. thankfully it's usually relatively easier to heal than other joints. i think you really should see an athletic therapist/physiotherapist. most G.P.'s don't know much. the sooner you do it, the sooner you can climb! and less chance of doing permanent damage.

It hurts a little every now and then... but the swellening is still there but not as much... probably cause i took a couple days easy... know it's b-ball time... my first game was tonight! We won! But knee is actin up on my again...

Well, this is my first post ever here at RC.com, and unfortunately its not a good one for me. Ive been out of climbing for about 6 months or so now for a shoulder condition that's been keeping me on the ground. After way too much hassling with my old doctor, I Finally was able to get a new doctor, and an MRI. Apparently what I have is Bursitis, with a Hypertrophy in the shoulder. Basically, the joints in my shoulder are extremely inflamed and that causes the joint to not "glide" as it should. This actually wasnt caused by Climbing, but it sure as hell has kept me from Climbing, and let me say, Ive been climbing about a year and if there is a more addicting sport in the world, I'd be shocked. That said, everyone writing in about seeing a sports medicine specialist has helped. Im actually getting referrals for an orthopedic doctor as well as a sports medicine specialist today. Oh well, any hints on therapy, anything else, let me know.

Believe me the last thing you want is a shoulder problem.Go see a doctor and if you do decide to climb anyways make sure you warm up properly and strench.

Mine "crack" when I rotate them in a circle, but they don't hurt. Why do they "crack" like that? Also, sometimes when I lean back real far, my chest bone cracks really loudly. Anyone else crack their chest? It hurt like hell the first time, but it usually feels good when it happens now.
