Does anyone know if there exists a good biography on Fred Beckey?

I've always been very intrigued by his exploits, but I've only heard about bits and pieces in various guidebooks.

A history on his life would be like a history on climbing in North America from 1940-1980!

No biography exists yet because, to my knowledge, no one has been able to get Fred to sit still long enough to actually put the thing to paper and make sure it is accurate. However, if one is interested in a type of bio for stuff before c.1965, then get a copy of Challenge of the North Cascades, by Fred Beckey. It is out-of-print in hardback, but might be available in softcover...I am not sure.

I saw Fred Beckey's talk last night! That was some cool stuff! My only complaint was that it took way too long for them to dim the lights and focus the slide projector.

Challenge of the North Cascades.

Cascade Alpine Guides

He has several other books out as well.

He has a new book out that is amazing! "The Range of Glaciers"

All these chronicle the life a of a great man and good friend.

I wasn't aware he stopped in 1980. He climbed in China in the late 1930s or early 1940s, also. There's no American climber like Fred. He is truly a national treasure.

Coming from John Gill...that is one heck of a complement. So Mr. Gill, where can one find your biography? :)

Here I spend my days climbing Becky routes and trying to repeat Gill problems.

Considering the source, that's pretty fine praise ;) But I would have to agree, the man is one-of-a-kind.

He still climbs at his current age!

I'm well aware that he still climbs, but the climbs he does now would not be considered to be at the forefront of the sport, and therefore would not be significant in a historical context...as I stated.

Mr. Gill's biogrophy is John Gill: Master of Rock by Pat Ament. I've read it, it is very good.
