Well , ahving missed out on the fun adn starving yous guys, Monday am I'm telling my boss (asking politly) I'm taking next weekend off. Leaving the nextel home ! Crow Hill sounds great, wont promise to be there real early though, I'll say I'll get there sometime in the AM.
The only good thing about working all weekend is ...yep you guessed it O.T. Bills, Food, Gear !

My bro-in-law was pissed at me for having to work, but it's the work that allows me to have the extra gear he needs to get into it !

Missed you guys today, you definetly had more fun than I did.....Got a good case of swamp ass !

Hey dude, This is Matt from the group of four you meet up with at QQ. That was fun yesterday. We go out to QQ and the other areas around here quite often, I'm sure we will see a lot of us this summer if you are around. If you are in need of some climbing partners on any given weekend drop me a PM and I will let you know what we are up to.

P.S. I hope this weather stays :)

Sound like a great time was had by all! Here's the New Hampshire report: Rumney was mad crowded! Most of the faces 5.9 and up were dry, most of those 5.8 and under were wet. The ground was still very slushy/icey. Towards the end of the day, lots of people were using the trails more like bobsled runs than like trails (sit on your ass and go) because of the ice, and because a lot of the gym/sport climbers were wearing sneakers instead of boots. Almost all of the ice on the rock faces had fallen/was falling off.

But the weather was nice, the climbing was nice, and I missed you all!!!

Next weekend at Crow Hill if the weather holds? Anyone want to follow my lead up Tarzan? It's probably the longest and nicest 5.8 in MA. And if you fall, be sure to make like Tarzan and give a good yodel, 'cause it's a hell of a swing into open space! :)

GO

sillymnkee - nice shots!

If Crow Hill is going to be too wet (rain or snow is predicted for late this week, and CH can be very slow to dry out) do folks have other suggestions? QQ again? Red Rock? Hammond Pond? Black and White Rocks? Rumney?

I'm still a QQ newie, and there are many more routes there that I have yet to climb, so I'm happy to go there again. *edit* that said, it wouldn't bother me to try a new crag.

caveat: my vote may not count for much this weekend. won't know if I can make it until friday or something.

I'm new to the area and have only been to QQ. I'd really like to try someplace else. So my vote is pretty much anywhere other than QQ. And I don't mind a longer drive (up to two hours or so). But if everyone decides that they just want to stick with the quarry, I would still go there.

Looks like Sunday is the better day. Forecast is for mostly sunny with highs around 50. Unfortunately, it seems was a bit premature in suggesting Crow Hill. It's still pretty wet, and the rain on Friday won't help matters. Sigh...

So... Quincy Quarries and Red Rocks are the two local places most likely to be dry. Any preferences? QQ gets my vote. Anyone else?

So I took a linch time stroll through the Lynn Fells woods today, re-visited Black and White rocks...decided to "play around" and soloed melrose rock..it's not really rated or even mentioned in the boston rocks. Cute little climb.

Though at White rock, there are no anchors....anywhere ! As a native of Melrose, I feel that it may be warrantable to place some bolts at key locations above the climbs for both rap and TR. As usual I have the nessesary equipment and approved hardware to place said bolts and hangers, though I want and respect your opinions. Not to mention I'd like some help. (generators are heavy)

Just a query at this point.

I appreciate the spirit of helpfulness, but bolts are really not called for there.

It's trivial to set up anchors anywhere in the B&W rocks with long slings off the trees. Of course a few nuts are nice to have, too. And the walk-offs from black rock, white rock, and pinnacle rock, as well as the smaller rocks, are quite trivial. You can rap for fun, but it's no more than a hundred yard walk (not a scramble, a walk) to get down from the biggest crags there.

In my opinion, where bolts aren't needed for safe climbing, they're an eyesore. If you decide to bolt anyway - please check in with the MDC and/or the Friends of the Middlesex Fells Organization. I'd hate to see climbing banned there because of a few bolts.

Also, the Middlesex Fells is not a Quarry, it's a natural preserve. To my mind, that makes a big difference.

GO

PS - hope to see you this Sunday at QQ! I'm bringing a few friends who I'd like to introduce to you all as well!

oh geez, here comes a massachusetts bolt war ... JUST KIDDING ... I'm looking forward to getting out to the fells sometime this season and seeing what y'all are talking about - I haven't climbed there except for some bouldering at pinacle rock once.

by the (spr)[gray]w[/gray]ay, had a great time in Tennessee over a long weekend ... hopefully I can post some pics soon ... cruising back into chilly new england last night reminded me that we are lucky to have a place like QQ that gets lots of sun for early season climbing. let's enjoy it for a couple more weeks then lets tear it up all over the region ...

hope to get out there with y'all soon .... jeremy

I'm up for QQ if it's on Sunday. I've missed all the previous trips so I'm not burned out on it yet.

I was there Wednesday afternoon and the fields are really wet, so bring your good boots and lots of tarps, towels and plastic for belay. Good news is with all the warmth and the rain it should be snow free, even along the rims.

Anyone else? Hell, who's back online so far might be a better question. Alot of the regulars might not even be back yet.

OK, OK, I admit I was a little loaded ( DeWars 12 year Scotch) When I was thinking of the bolt idea, valid points on not ruining it for climbers, and as a drunken teenager I can tell you I have carnal knowledge of just how easy it is to get down.....like when your running through the woods with 20 other kids and your carrying a keg ! (running from the cops that is)

Scrap the Idea, plenty of pro opps at the top. Don't know about Sunday, May be bringing the bro back to U-ass.

Hope you can make it to QQ tomorrow. We've still got a few new routes I need to get graded for the new BR, and not much time left to do it. The more people who climb them, the better the consensus grades will be!

I checked out Crow Hill today and it is very wet (Franny's Folly is a waterfall). Some (2-3) routes are just wet and not drippy, one or 2 of the steeply overhanging routes are mostly dry.
The approach is steep and slippery as well.
I did see some hardy folk climbing some of the less popular routes (not in my guidebook).
