Hey everyone. I want to get myself a new winter shell for xmas and I wanted to know what everyone here wears. I'll be using it for mountaineering/skiing. Also, if anyone knows of a site that has good reviews, let me know (I've already checked out gearreview.com). Thanks dudes!

Just like any other gear it's a matter of personal preference. All the major manufactures have good gear. It's a matter of figuring out wich bells and whistles you prefer. I'm a big fan of Patagonia.

Arc Teryx. Big bucks but made specifically for the activities we do. Light, trim fitting and made for moving fast and light. Also check out Cloudveil. Their softshell stuff is the 'nads. Check out some of the closeout merchants like Sierra Trading Post or Overstock.com.

Does anyone wear a North Face shell? I hear a lot about one particular shell they make, called the Kichatna. Big bucks though...

I own the North Face Mountain Lite jacket. As well as TNF Nuptse down coat. As well a TNF fleece jacket. The nice thing about these are that the fleece and the down are made to be zipped into the shell. Thus, allowing for better climate control.

the latest phase in clothing is 'soft shells'. patagonia has been one of the first companies to offer a really nice system soft shell system (tops and bottoms). soft shells are wind-proof, highly water RESISTANT shells that are much more comfortable in 90% in the conditions you'll encounter because they breathe so well. for that 10% where it's pouring rain in the winter, or any other time for that matter, you'll need a waterproof breathable. marmot makes some really nice gear too, and you'll see them coming out with a soft shell line this spring. if you're going to be skiing, i'd opt for a jacket with a powder skirt. they also help a little bit for sealing out drafts when ice/alpine climbing.

I use a moonstone hooded down jacket and a moonstone 3-layer gore tex mountaineering shell. They work great and are suuuuppper tough.

My favorite is Marmot. Very high quality stuff but not the most expensive on the market. Mtn. Hardware is very good and so is Arc Teryx if you have the dough. I wouldn't buy anything TNF though. Too expensive for what you're getting.

Thanks to everyone who posted. I went out this evening and ended up buying a Mtn. Hardware shell. 'Twas expensive but hey, it's Christmas!!

I have the Marmot Stretch Armstrong Jacket, I got it for 50% off at www.rei-outlet.com. It's a great jacket because you have plenty of range of motion in your arms, which is good for climbing.

I just bought a new patagucci shell to replace my old one, which I had for 15 years. I live right down the road from the patgucci OUTLET, in Reno, which makes this a reasonable option. The gear there is normally abt 40% off of retail, and a few times a year, they take abt 50% of of THAT. which means you're finally paying a reasonable price for the stuff.
I also have a Wild Things one piece suit for the really ugly uglies. I've used it on 3 big routes in the alaska range, and i've been really happy with it. Titoune Bouchard (owner) modified this suit for my tall size and sent me essentially a custom made suit. I cannot say enough nice things abt that company.
I think it can even be used as a star trek teleporter...beam me up, Mugs..
