I am a newbie and you guys were great in helping me with shoes so now my question is talk to me about harnesses and harness packages. I will mainly be top roping for right now. I live in North Texas so the little I know about climbing here is that it will mainly be not real intensive top roping and a little gym climbing, but I would like as complete a harnass as possible. I was kind of thinking about the Black Diamond Momentum Package. Cost is a factor, but please give me ideas. Thanks again.

First thing's first; go for comfort. I use the Petzl Corax (about $70) and it gets the job done. Padding is nice, but you don't need to go overboard on this. If you're not really hanging on ropes for hours at a time, padding isn't a super important issue. If you were doing lots of sitting, then it would be.

I wouldn't pay over $80 for the harness you would be buying. You just don't need the extra padding those ones would come with.

thats a great package. go for it. an expensive harness like the petzl corax is unnecessary.

Painomahnnis right, comfort first. I owned a Petzl Guru and I'd kill for another one. The Guru has been superceeded by the Calidris and I have to say, it's damn good too. What you get in the Calidris is a comfortable, light, fully adjustable harness that is suitable for anything from the gym to the Alps

If you're just starting out, I'd gor for the Momentum package. The harness is fully padded/adjustable so it's nice. You get an ATC, Airlock 'biner and chalk/chalkbag. Get shoes, and you're done. When you climb more, you may find you need the Petzl to get the comfort on long routes. I hear they're awesome for that.
