I just heard through the grape vine that ClimbXmedia is shutting down????
If this is true, it's a shame.
Can anyone shed more light on this?

There isn't anything on their site about it. Sounds like it could be a rumor.. but, if it were true, it would suck. Nothing like watching climbing video's at work.

would confirm my worst suspicions about their business model...

I wish them the best, of course, but I always had trouble figuring out how they'd make money while doing high-bandwidth stuff like videos.

Hope it's not true, for their sake.

I've had the same thoughts as Tim. I'm not sure I understand their business model and if this new is true I can't say it would come as a complete surprise. That said, I've enjoyed the site very much and appreciate the amount of work they put in to it.

If you knew how much their advertisers were paying them per month you'd understand better - trust me on this 1. Would be too bad if they were shutting down, but I have to doubt it @ this point.

Business model? I have a feeling they were operating on the same model as thousands of failed dot coms: create a stir initially with a "flashy" concept to gain the capitol it needed to keep it going for awhile, til investors figure out there was no profit potential.

Ahhh, the good ol' days of easy money.

Besides this, all-Flash sites, other than design projects, are doomed to fail, IMHO. The internet is built on an HTML model, and those who decide to reinvent it are dreaming - just look at the survivors of the fallout.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. Can't stand the all the flash and I have a cable modem. Can't imagine somebody trying it on dial-up. I've also revisited many times hoping to find new stuff and it never changes.

You heard through the grapevine....Seems like rumor and baseless speculation to me, there is a contact link on their site, why don't you just ask them?

Josh Lowell has been making the best climbing videos around since before cXm started... until I hear it from the source, I don't care whether it's flash, html, whatever, I'll bet he's doing just fine. I bought Dosage, Vol. 1 TWICE last year. If quality is the key, then he's got it. I, for one, would donate to the cause of keeping cXm alive if needed, without giving it a second thought...

I'm pretty positive that they are shutting down. I heard through the grapevine that they have been trying to sale it now for weeks but nobody is interested. I'm sure we will see somthing very soon on the site.
I'm sure I will be killed now  for leaking this info.
Please contact CxM if you are intersted in buying the site. I'm sure they will want to hear from you.

bighigaz ,
I don't believe Mr. Lowell has been working with CMX for some time - moved on to bigger, better things? I agree he was a talented producer. I haven't noticed their monthly page in R&I lately either.

I'm happy you don't care whether the site is Flash, HTML, or "whatever". The last thing we need is picky consumers...

I'm sure the CMX folks would appreciate your donations - please send a check off right away, and avoid any second thoughts, as I hear they're going under. Maybe buy a few more copies of Dosage while you're at it. You can never have too many of those.

Apart from the lack of tini, tiny videos of people staring at their projects, RC.COM is vastly more marketable for advertising. It's a valuable resource for info, it's usable, and it's updated. Hell, you can even bookmark it's pages and use your browser's 'back' button - what a concept!

That's funny. What a perfect example of typical forum gossib and BS.

This is straight from their announcement to shut down:
"Our attempt to rasie money through web advertisements has fallen short of our gaol."

In any event, this type of business model which is based primarily on online ad revenue is what I and a few others above were refering to. That said, I'm very sorry to see the site shutdown. It's sad. They did very nice work and you could tell that it was a labor of love.
