Can anyone tell me any good ways to loose off your forearm muscles once you get pumped out on a problem? I seem to get pumped out allot on travserses and overhangs and it really cuts into my climbing time at lunchtimes if I've got to wait for my arms to recover every time I pump out... Thanks in advance.

The best thing is to back off prior to getting pumped. OK, OK....easier said than done and not much fun, but it's easier to prevent a pump than to recover from one. If my knowledge of biokinesiphysiowhackydoodle is correct (and it rarely is) part of the pump is your blood vessels constricting, making it harder to flush the lactic acid out and to get oxygen and energy laden blood in. Once you're pumped, a good thing to do is the "Royal Wave". Do your best immitation of the Queen Mum and shake out your hands/forearms ABOVE your head. This utilizes gravity (sometimes NOT our best friend) to help flush the muscles. Alternate this with a low shake out for best results. Traddad

Also, if you have someone with you, they can "flush" the lactic acid out. I don't have any physiological basis for this, but it seems to work. I'll do my best to describe it: 1. Make a fist and flex your wrist (elbow bent to about 90 degrees). 2. Have your partner grab your forearm near the elbow and press hard (but not so it hurts) with their fingers into the front (flexor side) of your forearm. 3. Open your fingers slowly. 4. Repeat, but have your partner grab about 1-2 inches higher on your forearm and repeat til they reach your wrist. Hope this makes sense. It seems to have worked for me in the past.

Pro cyclists have long used massage to rid their legs of lactic acid after hard races/training rides. Can a masseuse fit in my haul bag?

The first few years of bouldering, I never paid much attention to endurance. I was training mostly for power, and that's what I got.... mostly power, very little endurance. Lately I have been training for routes a lot more. In the gym I do traverses, etc. One of the interesting side effects of this training is that my bouldering is improving a lot. I'm able to climb longer and stronger because my endurance is better. I'd suggest doing some serious endurance training if you are noticing that you are losing your forearms during a sesh. tim

In reply to: Pro cyclists have long used massage to rid their legs of lactic acid after hard races/training rides. Can a masseuse fit in my haul bag? I used to race bicycles and can attest to massage doing the trick. Burnt my legs out so bad in a race (I raced on the velodrome) that I fell over when I tried to stand up on them, after a quick massage, a little rest, and a quick spin on a stationary trainer, I went on to win the next race. Isn't that one of the reasons why we get girlfriends in the first place, so they can massage our pumped out arms? :D
