I've got a rope I just retired. Its an 11mm rope that has never taken a fall on it. What is everyone's opinion on cutting it up for cord? Do's dont's.
Ok here is the scoop. This rope is almost 7 years old. The first 4 years of its life, it was used once a month on average. Then it had a 2 year vacation when I moved. Now this last year it has been climbed on almost every week. So that is the story of big blue, like I said it is an 11mm.
So what do you think???

The general rule of thumb is to retire any rope over 5 years old. Although I have one that is 7 years old that I use to top rope occasionally and use as a second rope when rapelling. I know some people cut up old ropes and use at belay stations. As a lead rope it is done but it still might have some life left in it for other purposes.

Once again I will refer to the rec.climbing FAQ maintained at tradgirl.com. I too have a retired 11MM (ol' purple) with a core shot and was considering either a rope rug, or a slackline in the backyard this summer.

I'm lucky if I can get one entire season out of mine. I just got a new 9.8x60 Ocun for Christmas, it's replacing a Sterling that I've only had for about 9 months.
The "Depending on how much you use it"-rule is extrememly important to take into account.
