Anyone know of sport climbing in northern-mid Montana? We want places to go for weekends, but I haven't found any info on areas there so far. Any good books anyone can recomend? Thanks!

the best book for you would probably be a road atlas to help you find your way out of Montana

You might check out Randall Green's statewide guidebook, _Rock Climbing Montana_ (1995). It seems to give a decent overview of where and what the main crags are. Once you narrow it down you could search for more detailed and up-to-date info on specific areas. That's my approach anyhow, as a tourist planning to visit the state this summer.

Lake Kookanoosa (spelling). I don't know how far you are from there. Missoula has some ok stuff. I guesss that's far for you. Maybe I don't know any. Elliott

I think their is a crag in kalispell? but i dont know i just saw it kinda for a second, but the most developed areas are going to be by hamilton blodget canyon and kootenai, two very awesome area's i enjoy. You might wanna call moonstone mountaineering in missoula, or trail head outfitters also in missioula they'd be able to tell you more.

In reply to: Anyone know of sport climbing in northern-mid Montana? We want places to go for weekends, but I haven't found any info on areas there so far. Any good books anyone can recomend? Thanks! You might try Dwight Bishop's guide to the Butte area. Dwight's a good source for newer stuff too. Hear tell he's been at it again...(break from bike racing, or was bike racing a break from climbing? Har har...). If you get ahold of him, tell him hi for me. Green's statewide book has some stuff. Rattlesnake Gulch fer instance. Not sure if he's still around... Not much sport south of Msla in the Bitterroots. Trad and run slab, but not sport. Near what city? Helena has some newer stuff, I hear tell. Some of it is lower profile. Local shops may know, like Pipestone in Msla (Butte shop closed by now?) and Trailhead too. I know of some fun stuff (newer) in the southern part of the state...(PM if you want/need details....)... I'd highly recommend some trad...and you'll find so much more to do up there... Brian in SLC (but "from" Msla)...

Montana has great sport climbs. The bitterroot valley has all the climbs you want and a short drive. Get rock climbing Montana Falcon guide and it'll show you what you want. Its also Pipestone in Missoula not moonstone. They'll give you great advise on climbs. If you in Missoula and want to climb give me a ring and I'll show some great routes!

I've climbed with Randall Green in Clark (I think) just outside of Helena, and his guidebook has gotta be a must for Montana climbing. I'd go with what Ambler says.

Let's not forget Mulkey Gulch, fine bolted routes up to 200'. Ryan, I look for you out there every Saturday :) Upcoming events include Weekend camping trip for Elk Rock 5/30. Crack climbing weekend camp trip at Sheep Mtn., Helena 6/13. Dragons Back in Butte the following weekend. Tentative 7/28 weekend camp trip for The Wedge, south of Butte.

Lost my partner for the holiday, so I'm looking for someone from the Missoula area to climb with this Memorial Day weekend. Also, a reminder about Lolo Pass camping and Elk Rock climbing on the last weekend of May, I am going to snag a large area for camping that can accommodate a large number of people. Email me for details.

Go to missoula, ask the guys at the climbing shop, and you will be climbing in the most beautiful quiet corner of the world. (the guide book does very little justice for the missoula climbing probably cause most of the sport routes are newer than the book).
