I'm not sure Yam is so good for learning. Apart from the fact that it is multi-pitch, it is one of the biggest piles of lose choss I have climbed on. If you want some good rock to practice on, you should head for the granite in Squish. Talk to some local climbers in Canmore and I'm sure they would be able to recommend better places than Yam.

with the exception of the new style hard routes( the mixed bolted/gear ones, i.e. dreambed, snerts etc) the rock is abit sketch, it is more alpine in nature thus requiring more care, routefinding can also be challenging, may'be try some of the easier routes in the ghost river, although the red shirt route on yam is a good intro although a little slippery have fun
