I noticed a great line up a cliff on my lake today and plan on TR'ing it. But, it would require belaying from my jonboat. Has anyone ever attempted this?

I haven't attempted it, but I know it has been done. Also, If you can reach the top to set up a top rope, you can just build an anchor, have your partner clip in and belay you from the top. Let me know how the route goes.

At Bon Echo (ontario) we were going to start off of the boat, but we managed to find a place to set up. It can be done safely, but if you're using a canoe you might not want to stand while belaying. Maybe it's just me, but the belayer is supposed to catch the climber, and not the other way around.

Yeah I can't anchor from the top. I'm shoveling the guys driveway all winter just to set up the TR now but he doesn't want anyone on his property. And the boat should weigh enough. 21 foot jon(flat bottom) with a 60 horse jet.

Ive seen hanging belays over the water and even belays from a pontoon boat, but never a john. Should work fine though. Posting a shot of this climb would be nice, boat and all. added later >> nice job on the trading shoveling for access, hope you get a light winter! yea good call on the shoveling snow for accesss. thats way cool. i have been contemplating belaying from a canoe myself at the quarry across the river from my house. its private property so it would be kinda tough to truck a canoe in with gear and all but it would be fun and worth it i think... maybe not. tang

I presume you're gonna' drop anchor. Wouldn't be cool to drift off while belaying or while out of the boat either.
