Ok, well, I'm going to Russia July 16th 2003 and would like to know if there is anything near Perm worth climbing. It is the Ural mountains but I've never been there before so I wouldn't know. I don't speak any Russian which could prove to be a slight set back  but I'll have an interpreter with me. I'll be there about three weeks and would really like to do some climbing so if anyone lives there or will be there during that time, let me know so I can bring some gear. If not, maybe I'll just wander around until I find something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave

I spent two years in Russia with the Peace Corps and was just starting meet climbing people before I left. I lived in Cheboksary, the Russian equivalent of Kansas. I did travel through Ekatarinberg which is less than a day from Perm by train, and there is some climbing around there. Your best bet would be to try to hook up with a local, or hire a guide somewhere, cause you won't find much on your own if you don't speak Russian. If you can take the train to Krasnayarsk there is some pretty cool rock over there, I think it's around 30 hours on the train though. Russia is huge. Or just head to the Caucasus for some mountaineering fun. Check out www.risk.ru for some info in English, and links to the Russian Mountaineering Federation page (based in Ekatarinberg). Udachey vam, Stewart

Thanks Stewart, I'm sure this info will help quite a bit. I have a friend that I'm going to meet there that is a native speaker so communication won't be all that hard but I'll definately look into some of the places mentioned. Thanks for you help. David

I too spent some time in Russia, lived in St. Petersburg for a spell - unfortunately I didn't do any climbing. You can be sure there is some decent climbing within a country that boasts to be the largest of any other. Here's a link to Tradgirl's English to Russian for climber-specific vocab., lest you hook up with some russkii alpinisti. http://www.tradgirl.com/climbing_faq/translations/russian.htm Russian Language Lesson No. 1: Daitye pozhaluista - khlyeb, salo, i dvesti gram vodki. (Please give me bread, salo, and 200 grams of vodka.) Hope your trip is a blast! jason
