who would like to see a climbing wallpaper section? Just wondering if it would be possible for admins to choose pics & then ask contributors to submit larger images, say 800x600 for desktop applications

I will be rewriting the photo department over the next few months. I will look into that.

As long as it doesn't exceed 80K (Medium) I see no problem with this. Problem is server space, and the Gallery is filling up quickly. Like the page says, if Highs are ranked low, we will have to delete them without warning. This is largely due to the size of those files, and people mostly try to submit as High when they first start submitting photos.

Adam,
what I'm talking about is a pre-approved section where someone has posted a picture that is medium and then an administrator (or votes?) decide that it would be a good candidate for a larger file size to be used as wallpaper. IE: your picture of "High Exposure" could, initially, be submitted as a medium (600 pixels high) and then be approved for a seperate wallpaper section and be resubmitted at a larger size (800-1000pixels high), this way, the Gallery section would be limited, in ALL cases, to 60k or smaller images and there would be a completely different section for larger images: see what I mean?

something like this maybe?

Desktop Idea.

I got bored and did that a while ago.

PS, I do not have permission to use or alter that photo so technically the above link is to a sample only and should not be downloaded.

Correct me if I'm wrong... But that would only work on photos subitted as 'landscapes' and not 'portraits'. High E, for example, would have to be edited to be a 'landscape' to fit as wallpaper and keep it's proportions.

Another possibility to keeping overhead low on a wallpapers section is by changing your file format when you submit the picture. I forget which way around it is, but I believe if you change a bitmap to a .jpeg (by 'saving as' in most graphics software) one can drastically reduce the size (in bits) of the image, while maintaining most of the quality.

fiend, I was thinking more along the lines of just a larger version of submitted images and, maybe in the future, images such as yours. Initially it would seem easier to just request certain images submitted at a larger size and then maybe develop a special Wallpaper gallery for submissions. It just seems as though there is already more than enough material to choose from and all that needs to happen is that the images are increased in size to be better suited for wallpaper
